Well the pickup is dying and My uncle wants a new one he is sick of workin on the S10. I went online to gm buy power and was shocked at the lack of options and ability to mix and match. he is looking for a 4.3 v6 with a 5 speed W/overdrive and long bed. anyone no if they exist or is it a wild goose chase? thanks :p

You can order one. I went and looked at a few when I had truck fever. I wanted a xtracab ZR2 with the big wheels and tires. When I drove one I could hardly hold it in the road! They had a lot of 4-cyl autos with xtracab and just a few V-6's. The sales guy said that is all they sell so that is all they keep on hand. He can special order what I wanted. Try that and see. Check with a large Chevy dealer that specializes in fleet vehicles. Probably could get a base model with V-6 and choice of transmission.

later,

I'm a fan of the S-10 also, since buying my 1986 new. I don't think I got a particularly good deal on it because I wasn't experienced at negotiating - but so far it has lasted 345,000 miles with no engine work. So overall I guess I'm getting my money's worth from Chevy, if not from the dealership.

My theory about cars & trucks is to watch which ones (of the recent models) turn up on used car lots. It can be tough to find a used S-10 sometimes. However, I was very surprised to see a relatively large number of the ZR2 models being discarded. I always thought there might be something wrong with them in some way, but never test drove one. I resolved if I ever needed to get a replacement S-10 I was going for the regular chassis 4x4 with the heaviest suspension package - and leave the ZR2 alone.

It has been some time since I've been in a Chevy dealership, but I used to pick up the large booklets on the S-10. These booklets cover all the models and just about all the options, including what is in the special options packages. If you're just getting started on shopping, I'd recommend getting the booklet at the dealership rather than going online. Maybe their web site is "limited" in some way to the most profitable options..... ??

You already know this yourself, but for others, I'd suggest staying away from the 4-cyl engine if you want long life in the vehicle.

It's a shame more companies don't realize that just about the cheapest way to distribute their catalogs and brochures is to simply scan them into an Adobe PDF document. Chevy could easily do that with their model brochures.

Have you seen what Performance Products tries to do with their online catalog? I think the server has a catalog page all broken up into pieces in a database, and tries to assemble the page at the time of request. Something seems to go wrong with about every third page.

Oh, I guess I should mention the automatic transmission went out on the '86 S-10 at 212,000 miles. Got a quality rebuild though, it is still doing fine at 345K. In my younger days I thought automatic transmission fluid lasted the life of the vehicle. Ha! So I never changed it until the truck had 80K on it.

Fortunately I did know all about changing motor oil.

If your uncle is not in a super hurry, I think a new S 10 model is due out in a year or so, with a new inline 5 cylinder engine. It is supposed to be a slick peice(according to what I have read). These new models are also due for exterior and interior changes.... thought you might want to know
Happy shopping!
