I don't. Just because something is legal doesn't make it right. WBC is one example of this. It is legal for them to picket funerals like a bunch of jerks, but that doesn't make it right.

Would you someone calling a person with Down Syndrome an idiot or a dummy? They are also exercising their free speech rights well within the limits of the law.

BTW, don't get your last sentence. You are not required under the law to support all legal activity.

Fame, I gather, can be a b!tch as people come up to you and act like they know you, want their friends to see them with you, etc. I knew a famous guy once who referred to such people as 'star-f******.'

The Westborough Church of Vexatious Litigation are like the worst sort of star-f******. They attach themselves to events that have legitimate public appeal in order to suck on that energy and publicity. A pox on their asses. I better stay away as I might knock one of them on their well cushioned backside.
No it doesn't mean it is well advised but what are you trying to say? That free speech is only allowed if you like what is said? Hitler also supported free speech as long as you ended it with "Heil Hitler" and the content was approved.

A pretty good argument for being mediocre and trying to stay that way, isn't it?

Yes, stay away otherwise it does prove that you only support popular speech.

If you cannot support their right to say what they feel is right, what is it you support? IOW, Free speech is only allowed if you agree with the content? Isn't that the mark of every dictator? The question is "What is your PRINCIPLE?". Either you can support it in spite of your disagreement or you are only supporting it when it suits you.

No. I support their right to do what they are doing; at the same time, I do not support their doing it. There is a very definite distinction. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

To go back to my example, I believe that it is your right to call someone with a learning disability a dummy; yet, if you did it, I would be disgusted.

I dunno. Social pressure. No one wants a law for every damn possibility in life.

Hey, I don't approve of it myself and I too wish it would go away but I try my best to be consistent and not be a "fair weathered friend".

Hmm, I think we actually agree on most things here.

1) Westboro has and should have the right to protest as they are.
2) Westboro's protests are repugnant.

All I'm saying is that I believe I can simultaneously support their right to do what they are doing and not support their actions. For me, the law is just one facet of morality and that not all immoral actions are (or should be) prohibited by law, so I can simultaneously disapprove of an action and also disapprove of the state getting involved in it.

1) The majority of OD threads go off topic. It's just a fact of life here.

2) If you must "cleanse" this thread, how about just making everything from post #76 a new thread? That should work just as well, since the discussion here is not, in and of itself, out of line.
