Thumbs down Windows 8.1

Dear god its horrible. I got a new Asus with it and its awful. Next week I'm going to have my friend load windows 7 onto it.

That being said the new Asus with an Asus screen is just a meh experience. It lacks the pop of Apple's Retina display. The computer itself was not set up as flawlessly as an Apple product out of the box and required my buddy to download some drivers and stuff to make it work properly. It still gets funky once in awhile, although I suspect that's windows 8.1 doing crap.

All and all I'm not to thrilled with it, this will be my last PC I'll probably trade it for a 27in Imac. My only regret is that I spent a grand on it, should have coughed up the extra $1,500 for an Imac.

My old HP started to die but it was a very good computer, with the ASUS I feel like I wanted a new Lexus LS600 and got a CPO E350 that needs new tires instead.

8.1 isn't that horrible -- it's just Win 7 with an ugly start menu and ability to run mobile craplets built in. Can generally be fixed with software that allows running craplets on the desktop and adds a proper start menu.

i haven't gotten around to redoing my 8.1 machine yet, but I agree. There are ways around it in 8.1 but I think I'll be putting 7 back on my machine as well.

Yep it is. No way I could stand the thing without it. After installation, 8.1 has been good on my touch screen laptop.

im still running vista.

took a few years, but they got the bugs out of it for the most part. I had gone to windows 7, but it was a bootleg copy and the computer took a dive a year or so afterword, and vista was reinstalled with all the updates and has been fine.

How I remember the early days, as soon as I bought my computer, it wouldn't turn off. Vista would turn the damn thing on 5 times in a row after you went to shut down. That was my biggest single problem with that operating system.

This laptop is my last though, going to buy a big cheap desktop with a giant screen as soon as this inspiron finally craps out.

With phone technology these days, no need for a laptop anymore, at least for me.

It's certainly headed in that direction! I don't see a need for a personal one anymore. Our laptops are used primarily in our facility for wireless access to our Unix main system for inventory and Excel-based programs. As programs develop and allow communication between the Unix and a mobile platform, we'll likely slowly evolve in that direction. Although I will miss having actual keys rather than a vague virtual key footprint. But I'm a dinosaur.

I spend most of my internet time on my phone or IPad. Hardly on a PC or laptop. But the PC and laptop use is mostly for business software.

I'm the opposite. Most of my internet time is spent on the desktop. Either the multi-monitor desk or the TV hooked into the PC. The only thing I use my phone for is calls, messaging when not at a PC, or listening to pod casts on my commute home. I loath typing on a touch screen.

I am a mix... All of my work is done is done on desktop because laptops don't really have the computing power necessary for my work. At home I do a fair bit of gaming and music production so it's mainly desktop. Writing is mostly done on my laptop, note taking is on a tablet and everything else is phone. Yes I am a huge geek

Thing is, I like the idea of general purpose computing. Being able to run the software I want without Nanny Apple telling me "NO!" Or try to push me to put data on their f**king cloud. Remember the stunt they tried to pull in late 2013 by disabling USB and WiFi synching of mobile devices and mandating use of iCloud? They backtracked after outcry from privacy-conscious Europeans, but f**k them for even trying it.

iPad is the computing equivalent of San Quentin. I'm quite happy with my Windows 7 Pro Thinkpad. X201, basically IBM's answer to the Macbook Air.

Knocking the latest version of Windows has become a fine american tradition. Truth is they all sucked and always will. Consumerism is a waste. They probably make a pill for that.
