I have a 1995 F250 7.3 turbo diesel w/manual trans, 190k miles and I love it.
Of all the vehicles I own (currently 11) my truck would be the hardest to part with.
All I've ever really had to do to it is routine maintenance, the crank sensor did go bad at around 120k. I also have had to do the front hubs to manual conversion and a few u joints,,,,BUT I use my truck for real work!
It is either pulling a 24 foot enclosed trailer down the highwat, or I have my curtis snow plow mounted on it to clean the parking at my business.

My truck is a bare bones- low option vehicle, which I like even more,
rubber floor mat, vinyl seat, crank windows, yeah! The only luxury items are ice cold A/C and cruise control, both work great.

Only complaint to date (and it is sort of my fault) is a lot of slack in the steering column bearings from tugging on the wheel as I get in the truck over the years.

I have a diamond eye 3" downpipe with a 4" exhaust, and a free flowing air filter. Other than that it is pretty much stock. I wouldn't trade it straight across for a new one. The OBS Ford is a "Man's truck" loud, heavy, and can use priuses for traction.

If that is the route you are going, fair enough. If you get 7.3, I'd run the VIN to see when it was built. Dad had, or should I say, I had a hell of a time getting front brake parts even from Ford with the VIN since it was probably the last of the 99s they were making. Do you know how to inspect an 01 for PMR?

7.3 Inspection Hole for Powdered Metal Rod Determination

If you want a bulletproof transmission, get it from E4OD | 4R100 | 5R110 Ford Diesel Powerstroke Transmissions

He has a reputation of fixing transmissions. His warranty is 2 years. After that, you have to pay for shipping. He had someone break 6 transmissions in 8 years. Only time he had to pay was for the case which broke when a rod came out of the engine. He didn't care that the guy was pulling sleds or racing.

I had his dual HPOP and transmission. We diagnosed the problem to the HPOP. He cheerfully sent me a rebuilt one and I sent him back the old one. He tore it apart and found nothing wrong. I fould out that the problem was with the IPR not the HPOP. Cost me shipping.
