Times have changed ...

Back in the day, I would have loved to have an excuse to get out of class on an "extra" project AND I would have made sure I did a GREAT job so I would have been the next pick. I remember "Mike the Janitor" picking a handful of us every now and then for an odd project or task.

If a window got broken such as yours, my parents would have been furious at me (or us) and NOT questioning why a teacher (or janitor) asked for 10 minutes of my precious time during the school day.

Times have changed and I do believe there's a difference between a public vs. "private" education. Have you thought about a private school???

I recall kneeling on hard beans on marble and that certainly got my attention, plus the other, clever ways nuns figured out how to capture and maintain one's attention. I am 100% OK with teachers imposing punishments (within reason) upon kids as well as other "tasks." The problem is that many parents want to yell and scream about "their kid" being subjected to this or that, yet their own crappy parenting is creating a generation of bums.

I feel for you. I endured a number of visits to the best of Richland School District II's middle school around 10 years ago and what jungle with a number of animals in it. Hope you find success with your window and new job ...

private schools in FL do not pay well, can fire you at the drop of a hat, and do not have my program.

Comprehensive insurance. They send a guy out that fixes it while you are at work or home or anywhere. Usually no deduct. No insurance?

I know the teachers at my son's school have for the most part been there forever, so I am guessing retention is pretty good and folks just don't get fired that easy but I could be wrong. Pay does stink to some degree, but having the summers off and making $30-$40K is not horrible for 8 or 9 months of 3 or 4 hours per day.

No program, however, is a show stopper.

I have yet to talk to a teacher who works "3 or 4 hours per day".

I have no problem with performance based job retention, just like most other jobs

Teachers unions make it very difficult to remove a poor teacher. The only people who suffer from that are children.

36k for 9 months of work and waaaaaay more than 8 hours a day is not worth it.

I have seen some landscapers come in with some decent looking homemade headache racks made out of wood that slip into the stake holes. Might be a good project for the offending students.

Hmmm ... I guess things are different all over.

Admittedly, the teachers at my son's school perform more than one task or class per day, e.g., teach math and serve as the assistant coach or this or that. However, it boils down to around half a day. They are physcially there most of the day if not the entire day, but they are not working all 8 hours.

I guess I look at a job differently. If I am hired to "teach" for example, I would assume I would be teaching 8 hours per day. If I get there at 730AM and I am leaving at 330PM for example, I would assume I would be teaching 8 classes throughout the day. However, not so from my observations. In that 8 hours, there are 3 or 4 classes, each class @ 40 minutes. Some teachers who only have 2 or so classes, might coach. So, yes, in my book, you're only working half of the day. I know that during the down time, many of those teachers are sitting in the Starbucks accross the parking lot, et cet.

Is that "horrible?" I don't think it's great, but it's not horrible "working" half the day and having off the summers and making $30-$40K per year with benefits is a decent gig. Plus, most of those guys have instant street credit in teaching and they do tutoring deals on the side where they pull down $50 net per hour. And I have a rough idea of the above because I looked into applying for a job teaching. I thought wowza, I am actually putting my B.A. in Philosophy to work ... lol

must be a cushy school. I'm working more than just my instructional time. and its not on "paid" time since paid time is from 8:15am - 4:15pm M-F.....

Your first sentence appears to be accurate. The city schools around here are mostly TFA teachers and they hardly get paid. It's an 8-9 hour day then at least a few hours after work for grading and lesson plans.

My mom has been a teacher for years, she works full days, runs a club or 2 and then comes home to grade papers and do plans. It's a 10-12 hour a day job, easily. She gets paid less than I did as a college intern. It's not a job you do for the money...if you are thinking that you're sorely mistaken. If you can get a job in the suburbs around here you can make 50k or so, which is on the high end.
