I read that all 3 presenters contracts end this month. This is probably some stunt by the BBC to give reason to end the program. Their loss. This is good for Clarkson, Hammond & May. They can make whatever show they want and own the rights, distribute it to networks and sell it online.

Unfortunately for us, it will mean at least a year before we see these guys at it again.

No network or production company in their right mind terminates a successful network series because of some tiff between a series principal and a very replaceable producer. I don't see them going anywhere but back to BBC.

While generally right, there are exceptions and the issue isn't just a "replaceable producer." The Smother's Brothers comes to mind; certainly Paula Deen; Adam Richman (Man v Food), but most networks want to keep advertising revenues (which may separate the BBC somewhat, but not completely) and wind up like A&E Duck Dynasty.

It was Wallace Beery, I believe.

ButGable got drunk and ran his Duesenburg all over this property outside Chicago at the height of his career. He was taken away in an ambulance as listed suffering from a severe fever with complications affecting his gall bladder, etc.

When he came out of convalescense, he also had new (false) teeth, because he lost a couple on the steering wheel of the D.

CBS once (spring of 1971) cleared out its' entire schedule of country shows because the new management didn't want to be seen as a network of low brow comedy. All of them, like The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres to name two, were money makers but the net wanted a new direction. And they finally got it even though it took them almost 40 years to do it.

Top Gear is said to be the number one money maker for the BBC. When you are sitting in that position the talent can start calling the shots and the suits get very troubled over this. This is show-biz and egos can screw up anything and often do.

Examples: NCIS is the top rated show on broadcast TV. Mark Harmon wanted a raise but did not want to kill the show through blowing up the budget. So he took a Producer credit which is worth something with or without additional money. Dan Castellaneta is said to have taken a pay cut to keep The Simpson's on the air in exchange for a Producer credit.

And both of those examples prove that the suits at two nets remember how CBS cut its' own throat back in 1971. The suits may or may not want a new direction but one thing they don't want it to go down in history as the people who killed their net's biggest rater.

Clarkson could have been pushing for more control. Who knows?

If the BBC wanted to shut down Top Gear they would not let a little thing like it being a money machine stand in the way. After all, the suits can't let the inmates run the nut house, or at least that is there way of thinking.

Replace Clarkson (actor, who pretends to be a car guy) and with a real car guy like Rowan Atkinson.

I'm not sure they could afford Atkinson but then he might make a good 'guest host' while Clarkson is in his time out mode.

The only downside to this, from Clarkson's standpoint, is that Atkinson might like it and everyone would forget Clarkson.

There would also be the overshadowing of May and Hammond who are talented in their own way but would be blown off the screen by Atkinson.

One problem with replacing Clarkson is that Clarkson is, in theory anyway, playing himself. If you watch anything May or Hammond has done outside of Top Gear you will see they also are just being themselves. And in their case that is enough.

But anyone else who is established as a Actor might not be able to bring the same level of 'realism' to the show since everyone would know they are playing a part. And if they were just being themselves would the public like what they see?

Johhny Depp is fun to watch in his roles but in real life he is sort of boring. Any replacement for Clarkson would have their on screen persona to overcome.

If this were a contract ploy by the BBC we' might be hearing "leaks" that they are talking to replacements soon.
