Just in the last few years I learned to appreciate the difference between dirt and soil.

Looks good, our raised beds will be going in soon. It's nice not having to bend over as much and keeps the bugs out.

I was put to task this evening cleaning out the incubator. Not the worst chore and now we are 3 weeks out from having a bunch of fluff butts hatched. Last set hatched 18 of 28. This time its a full 48 eggs.

Good garden news today, it seems those ladybugs we spotted fooling around a while back were not too embarrassed to keep from getting the job done. Ladybug larva are everywhere! This will be good for the garden now, and into the future, as it is likely they'll keep mating here, and the cycle will continue. Now, what eats snails (and isn't a jerk)...

That will get you plenty of fertilizer, along with the tasty stuff.

Ladybugs are great!

We have an unknown but probably substantial number of ladybugs living in the walls of our house all year. I'm pretty sure they are eating the moths/larvae-we haven't seen any wool eaters in a couple months, and in our old apartment they were a nonstop problem. 0 flies, and almost no stinkbugs too.

I'll see about snapping some pics. The larva are great, they eat far more than the adults do, and are usually quite active in roaming all over the plants looking for a snack. I guess in that manner they're like the young of our own species. Ladybugs in general though tend t come back to where they were hatched to mate, so we're hoping this means we'll have a constant influx of new ones.

We prefer to garden naturally, avoiding the chemicals when we can, so this is great. Most bugs we allow in the garden/yard, with a few exceptions. Notably: Tomato worms and/or Sphinx months, June bugs, slugs and snails near the garden, Black Widows in areas either the dogs or the two of us frequent... I'm sure there are others. We encourage ladybugs, praying mantises, and earthworms. As well as lizards and toads. And treefrogs, when they happen to be in the area.

Be very thankful that you haven't come to know the brown marmorated stink bug.... absolutely awful things, totally destroyed pretty much everything we planted for three years running. Indicators are that this year should mark a significant downturn in their population locally - here's hoping.

Still no predators in the US, and no effective chemical warfare options

We had some snow fall today, about 2 inches by noon. As I watched it coming down I wondered if maybe I should have covered the plants with plastic. I figured nah lets see what these cold weather cultivars can take. After all the air temp was 32 degrees and they've seen colder already. Well by 5:30 the snow was gone the air was 10 degrees warmer and there was 3/16" in the rain gauge. Nothing to worry about. Well I am a little worried the cold will make them bolt before they yield any food.

More urban farming this weekend. Picked up our bee hives and got them painted. She wanted pink and turquoise as you can see. Bees arrive in a couple weeks so we need to have everything setup and ready to go. I plan to put them on the roof of one of our detached out buildings.
