Hangar full of Messerschmitts for sale in Texas

Looks like they were sold off, but still a great story and video. A stunt pilot who worked in the Battle of Brittian movie opted to get paid it ME 109s rather than take an IOU. They were in storage ever since.

i couldn't see the video, but IIRC the bf 109s in the movie battle of Britain were manufactured in Spain(they have different exhaust manifold than German made ones) during the post war period for use by the Spanish Air force along with He111 and ju52, i think two of the ju 52s are still out there flying!

Wonder what they are worth? Probably $1m each? The two seater probably more.

a few years back i looked in airplanetrader or some sort of mag and you could get a p51 for about 1-1.5 million, i would think these would go for a bit more, the guy that owns mercedessorce flys a Corsair that would be one hot airplane to own

I think he said in the video that pilot skill being equal, the P51 and Spitfire didn't stand a chance against the 109. Clearly your dad was a skilled pilot. Germany was losing all of their skilled pilots and not putting enough effort into replacing them.

What did he fly?

I think you would like this video as well if you haven't seen it already.

BoB BF109 (sort of)

These are indeed license-built BF 109 airframes, first flown in 1954. They used RR Merlins, which is an upright V-12..and it changed the nose of the aircraft considerably. It is referred to as the HA-1112-M1. Wikipedia says 172 were built.

Great story and an amazing pilot. I feel for his grand-kids losing their dad, but it's nice their grandpa is still going strong and will take care of them. Thanks for sharing!

Thats really kind of stupid to want A/C in something like a Me-262 unless he plans on flying below 6000' or so all the time. Once you get up there, especially with jet performance, the outside air is plenty cool. Buzzing around in my friends Cessna 172 on a hot Kansas summer day, we easily needed cabin heat at altitude. That would be a lot of added weight and complexity to add an air conditioning system in a 1-2 seat jet. If you had a King Air and hauled people around, sure.

I could only have 1 piston powered WWII aircraft, I think it would have to be an Fw-190D-9 or Ta-152

If I could have only 1 jet of any kind or airplane for that matter, Hands down, no contest F-104S Starfighter but with the short VAN "turkey feather" augmentor that howls like a SOB

Skippy~ As for perception: Drive what you like and can afford. Those who don't like it can supply vacuum to one of your components. LOL

If you need parts, I have some!
