B17 engine start. I love these old war birds. When I was a kid I took a model airplane class with a bunch of old timers who were WW2 Army air core vets. I wish they were still around because I remember a handful of stories and I'm sure they had many more. One was a gunner on a PBY flying boat in the pacific. He said they had a new guy and a Zero came up on them one time and was shooting at them. The new gunner hid behind a bulkhead. He was like you (*^&&*(&*(& its only 1/2 plywood get on your gun!

Anyone care to guess what occurred 70 years ago today? . . . . Alfred Jodl signed Germany's unconditional surrender in Reims France. Germany surrenders unconditionally to the Allies at Reims - May 07, 1945 - HISTORY.com http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/07/may-7-1945-nazi-germany-surrenders-in-world-war-ii/?_r=0 Hermann Goering, who commanded the Luftwaffe, was also apprehended the night of May7-8 1945. On the evening of May 7, 1945 German Corps G, First Germany Army, and the U.S. Seventh Army had negotiated a cease-fire, and both units agreed to stop troop movements as well as to cease shooting at each other. During this time Göring sent a note to Seventh Army Headquarters in Kitzbühel, Austria, informing them that he would meet the Americans at the Fischhorn Castle at Zell am See, to surrender. At the time of his note Göring was staying at his Mauterndorf Castle, about 100 miles from the Fischhorn. Nazi Treasures: Goering's Capture Prize Catch of the 36th Infantry Division 9 (A Texas outfit BTW ![]() ....Von Brauchitsch arrived at the Division CP early in the morning of May 7 with a message to Gen. Eisenhower and Gen. Devers, Commanding Sixth Army Group. He explained his mission to Gen. Dahlquist and Gen. Stack, offering to send his driver with the latter to Goering's secret hideaway. Gen. Stack accompanied the driver and intercepted the pompous Goering on a road near Radstadt, about 35 miles southeast of Salzburg. The marshal understood some English, spoke very little. He was accompanied in his Mercedes Benz by his Frau Emmy, daughter Edda, several military aides and personal retainers.... Prize Catch |

I've been in a Vans RV-7 in the summer which has a big greenhouse canopy. Most guys in any airplane with windows or canopies taxi and what not with them open. Even military jets. Sure it can be warm, been there, done that. It is tolerable in most cases. What i'm getting at is, just buying and slapping a compressor, evaporator, and condenser is not a small task for an aircraft. Especially in a jet and the config of a Me-262. You would have to use an electrical motor (likely 400Hz AC) driven compressor for example. The engines generators have to be rated to handle that extra load with margin. Last I knew the reproduction Me-262's were being powered with GE J85 or CJ610's. Old engines that have long been out of common use. Not like you can go grab a properly generator off a shelf for one. A generator for a gas turbine engine could be as little as $30,000 or some I have changed were in excess of $200,000. So a guy could suck it up and be warm for a little bit, or add on potentially another $50,000? to the price of the plane plus weight. Weight is everything in aviation. Hey if you've got the money....
