Get quality equipment! You can get house brand euipment that is made by the big brands. Airgas's house brand Radnor is made by Victor. I believe Praxair's house brand Prostar is made by the same. Victor, Smith (miller), Concoa are all quality brands. Don't skimp when your life is potentially at stake. As far as hose type goes. Go with what is recommended. But, I have not personally seen this issue. I recommend NOT storing your hoses in direct sun over the long term. IMO that is more damaging to the hose.

I have an old trailer made from a 1950's pickup bed ......

OA is powerful, I've always enjoyed it but it's dangerous-the acetylene is explosive while propane is flammable.

Absolutely!Keep the hose out of hot sun and bright sun.

I knew a guy in OK who always brough that stuff into the shade oir into the barn.

He had hundred foot hoses and in a previous job had ruined his over about 5 years. And they can be expensive.

I just keep a short set with my portable rig which travels in a box.

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions. Y'all talked me into going name-brand, though knock-off's are about 3/4 the price and have more widgets. But being a newbie in the worst way, I don't have enough knowledge and experience to necessarily notice a bad fitting or dangerous connection or piece.

I'm springing for a 25 ft Grade T hose to replace the 12 footer. 50 ft sounds like a tangled mess and 12 ft sounds like a hassle.

If your interest lasts and you find yourself spending a considerable amount of time on this pursuit then buy what you want. Money is just a tool to spend your time the way you want to spend it. We all run out of quality time too soon.

Go to some estate sales and buy up equipment left behind by dead old farts.

I saw a recent "Progressive Farmer" issue in which some genius had taken old discs from his disc harrow and welded a pipe between two discs faced oppositely on the pipe ends, making a convenient tool/part tray. I got some old discs ... This is gonna be so cool!

Cut a thick-walled pipe to 3ft and welded the two discs to it. The edges of the disc were pretty sharp so I ground them down flat. Then I got to looking at the thing and decided I needed to brace the bottom so cut some 3/16 rusted plate and welded triangles to the base.

I sure learned a lot. For example, I knew I was supposed to tack the pieces in place before running a bead but I thought "they're small, what could go wrong?" HA! Mr Grinder came out and assisted removal and redoing it right.

I used an in-law's MIG just enough to recognize that MIG is where I'm going to end up eventually. But I really want to get pretty good at stick before I go to MIG.
