Add Skoda owned by volkswagon and probably the target market for them is old eastern block countries.

They use the volkswagon tdi engines as well. I have no ideal if they will be persecuted or not. They must have a reasonable size of production runs though.

Volkswagon has gone pretty quiet reciently. They may be having really great problems finding a way to reduce the nox low enough at highway speeds. Or it is so intrusive to other aspects to do so. The cars will not remain acceptable if achieved.

I do not think any car diesel has managed it yet. Volkswagon will probably have to after their deceptions. I would not expect the testers to do them any favors.

Indications volkswagon is trying to boost sales this week or at least increase tire kickers/.

That may be the crux of the problem. But what about Mercedes? They appear to have managed do do so no?

I wouldn't be surprised if they are cheating too.

BMW diesels performed well in real world tests. I believe mercedes did also. The same tests which identified the vw problem.

The standards can be met, but at the price of performance or Adblue urea tanks, so cheating is not the only way to meet the standards.

I read somewhere that when VW was designing the current TDI engine, they were looking at the option of using the urea tank system that Mercedes uses. VW decided that the urea system was too expensive, but now it looks like the MB system would have saved them millions of dollars.

I'd better place it @ a billion or more.....is most likely what it's going to cost them - all said and done.

It was estimated to be (I think) $335/car, but they ruled that that was too much and went with a cheat instead, partly due to a company-wide cost-cutting initiative at the time. $335/car would have been ~$3.7B, a whole lot less than they are having to spend now.

Does this in some way lend credence to their "The engineers did it and didn't tell us!" line? It would esplain why they didn't reveal it earlier.

While the science and math isn't particularly precise, there are now first run estimates as to the health costs of the VW cheat. It varies by location, as the cars are more widely sold outside the US and the emission effects vary, but statisticians are now putting up "increased deaths" as part of the effects.
