There is a Toyota from the early 1940's on display at a war museum in Texas.

It is a tank. It is quite small and the most interesting thing I found on it was the battery box was lined with wood to absorb the battery acid if the battery took a hit.

There is also a smaller tank built by General Motors on display. Both tanks are shot up to the point their insides are easy to inspect.

Guess which one has the better apparent build quality.

Check it out......

That's awesome. I'd love to have a 60s model Corolla.

Mmm ... I remember those 60s models. I imagine there was some quality there, but dang, the styling.

It is remarkable how quickly the Japanese caught up with the west. When Adm. Perry entered Edo Bay with the black ships in 1853 they were an advanced society in their own right but sort of stuck at an earlier point in time. They quickly saw what western tech had to offer.

Thank you so much! That is the coolest automotive article I have read in a long time! I've always wanted to see AA, now I know where to go do so...

Beautiful photography but it doesn't give any sense of scale. Wonder what its dimensions are?

Those steel wheels and the hood louvers look borrowed from a 35 chevy stake bed!

It is unfortunate they copied the Buick when they built the Avalon.

Ah yes, that explains the Hilux, the Corolla, the Camry, the Prius (the freakin' Prius!), the Lexus RX, etc... all obvious copies of existing cars, right?

Yup. Copies of existing ideas, etc. I don't recall saying they copied cars outright. If you can point that out, that would be great.

But since you brought up, and this is a Benz forum, then you should know full well how good they are at making copies. Granted, poor copies...

It's hard to copy ideas when you're launching the segment, such as with the Pruis and RX (the ML and RX launched at the same time, and one of them was arguably a greater success than the other). And unless you're lanching a segment/idea, how are you not copying it?

If you're talking about the Lexus LS, then yes, the first version did indeed bear a resemblance to the W126, but I think it's very hasty to define one of the world's largest automakers by one model that they launched 25 years ago and has since very much come into its own with a durability that exceeeds pretty much everything else in its segment.

LandYachtLover, if I am coming across as snipy/rude, I apologize. I have been fighting Microsoft products all evening and so my grouchiness is higher than usual.
