S600 On Jalopnik

Comment Of The Day: Accept No Substitutes But A V12 Benz Edition

I sure miss the performance, but not the repair costs. Watch out when you hit about 60k miles!!

A V12 Mercedes is always a good choice.

You just posted "Just say no to VW!" in the latest VW thread, but I think that that is honestly more applicable to the S600. The V12 gets you hooked, but after a while, the repair bills force you to pawn stolen goods to maintain your addiction .

I'm back to being a bi-turbo V12 owner. This time I made sure there was a warranty. Never again will I own an ABC equipped MB V12 without a warranty. The cost of the suspension alone can bankrupt you.

LOL, I did that too! BTW, why did you change your forum name from its previous legendary notoriety to this MollyPineapple?

Sounds like there is a story involving that answer, care to elaborate?

Here's a hint. The wheels are 13" wide in the rear and it has over 700 hp.

I keep seeing 03-04 S600s pop up on my local CL for $8k-$12k! So tempting...

I did talk to a friend though, and he has swapped his CL to conventional suspension - complete with swaybars! He gave me a list of all parts needed and what needs to be swapped - and to be honest, it doesn't look terrible.

Maybe this next summer.

I'm surprised this is possible. How did he turn off the warnings that would surely be triggered when the sensors in the suspension system are no longer there? From what I understand, the ABC system runs in tandem with the power steering--they have different reservoirs for each system that run off the same pump. Is a different power steering pump in that list of parts?

I'd love to see the list...I don't plan on doing this on mine anytime soon, but a repair bill for several thousand dollars could potentially change my mind

On-topic: I love the S55, but it's only made me want to try out that sexy, sexy biturbo V12

In a way, the S600 is a quite efficient vehicle, as it enables a person who has a desire to maintain two very expensive 6 cylinder engines an opportunity to do so within the confines of just one car...

Yes, it involves swapping the PS pump to one off of a non ABC car. You do have to swap one of the subframes to one off of an airmatic car to get the swaybar mounts, but it's not rocket science! From there, he used one of the coil spring conversion kits, and swaybars off of an airmatic car.

I'm not sure how he overcame the warnings, I'll ask him about that next time I see him.
