Retrofitting safety sensors to antique space heater
I have a lovely old gas fired space heater that I am considering installing in my house. Is there a way to retrofit the safety sensors to the valve so it can be made as safe as a modern appliance?

I'm sure it is possible but in this age of blame I get the feeling an insurance company might not like this idea if they had to make a payment for something totally not connected!

I think heaters like that nowadays rely upon oxygen sensors. Maybe doable to buy one of the propane or natural gas heaters from HF or Northern Tool and install the whole control mechanism into your heater. But I do agree that an insurance company may not look kindly upon such a retrofit.
If it's vented to the outside though, would any changes be necessary? Got a picture?

I have not looked at it closely. Venting to outside is a could be or might not be thing. I am guessing its not vented.

I ordered a new one today. About $250 shipped.
I wonder if there is a live tap kit for natural gas lines?

Smart move. One slight engineering miscalculation on the retrofit could have had bad consequences.

Today I installed it.
First planned to sit it on a hearth as that was shown in the brochure as an option. Carried 100# granite hearth down from the second story and Went to hardware because the gas flex pipe I ordered with the stove is at least a foot too short. Bought a longer one and the fittings needed to match up (supposedly). Went home prepared to install it all .....when I got into it it turns out to be an option to sit on the floor....if you order it that way. Drat! So next option is to hang it on the wall. Went to hardware, bought tapcons and a drill bit. Marked holes, tried to drill.....fifteen minutes later I have a hole in the concrete maybe 1/4" deep. Drat! Went to building, got hammer drill, came back and tried again....no dice. Called my brother and found out we have a REAL hammer drill with a cord, go get that and when I put in the hammer drill bit I find I can drill all four holes in about five minutes. Woo hoo! Then got to looking at the gas hose and found neither end will match up using any of the six fittings I now have....Drat! Went back to Ace and got the fittings I needed. Now it all installed in minutes. Got the instructions, purged the line and it fired up in no time at all. I predict that the pilot light will keep her toasty down to a very frigid temp outside. Grin.
