If I got 34 when driving 3.4 miles to work I'd be ecstatic! The car isn't even fully up to temperature by then! You're also likely interrupting DPF regens all the time so the car is always trying to start the regen over... another thing that drags fuel economy down.

IMHO that commute it too short for a modern TDI.

You also don't want an APR diesel tune. Look for one from Malone.

I think what I'm going to do is drive it to OKC and see how it does on mileage and then make a decision.

Hes not getting 50mpg. Remember in the VW diesel world everyone adds 10 to 20mpg to what they tell people their mileage is. Just like a peacock expands its tail to appear larger and attract a mate, and just like how every mercedes diesel can run for a bazillion miles on sawdust and peanut butter with no maintenance.

Agree with above, your commute is electric car distance, not ideal for a TDI and would result in that reduced mileage. Take it out for a couple hour drive and see what it returns

Without expanding my tail feathers i can tell you the wifes passat gets 41 reliably with her 2 hour daily commute, and my work car 01 ALH 6 speed gets the same. If either of us could stay off of the throttle we might do better

I'd believe 50mpg is possible....maybe...if you really hyper-mile it.

my '01 ("ALH") gets 42 or 43 on long trips...but it also has 211k on it (and apparently, no functioning oxygen sensor...)

Had a road trip this morning, 36-41 down the interstate at 70. good enough, no reason to blow 500 bucks on a reflash

I can believe that. Sometimes when I ask people what kind of mileage they get and they spout off some number but they cant tell you how many miles they get out of a tank of gas.

Our 00 will hit 50mpg on highway trips still (no plumage here) but obviously dips in the cold and with any stops/traffic.

525 and I'm at 1/8 tank on the truck. with the VW at about 32 mpg I figure I should have about 500

I can tell you it is about 45mpg with 75% highway driving. I don't know the exact average over all the tanks.

i have had my 00 jetta for 10 yrs and 340,000 miles(car has 580,000 miles).i keep track of every drop of fuel that goes in and mine during summer if i keep it under 60 will pull down 50-52,during winter it drops to 47 or so.BUT mine are 98% highway miles.the only town driving it gets it into the gas station and back out of town.some days i wish i had a 300 gallon fuel barrel out here on the farm.as mentioned it's too short of a distance, these cars were made for the road.

I also tend to believe they do well in primarily highway use s well. They seem to thrive on it and last far longer.
