automotive machine question

So it looks like I'll have to send off my k20A2 crank for my autocross car off to have a journal welded up. Is it likely such a shop could also lighten the crank for me?

There are lots of shops that can weld and resize a journal. Lightening a crank while maintaining balance and strength is quite a more sophisticated process. You will need to find a good racing crank shop for that. I used to know a guy in Dallas that was great at such work, but he's been dead for probably fifteen years or so now.

I can or any shop can You need to find one that knows where to take the weight off, and keep it balanced with out lowering the strength at your useful RPM/HP range.

I would definitely send it to a shop like dux recommends. There are lots of shops like the production, cut rate short block exchange shops, that can weld up and resize journals that you would never want to trust with a job like you need done.

I have seen manuals of older cars where sometimes you can get information on whyere to lighten the crank.

When I worked for Chrysler the racing team called the Golden Commandos did a lot of work in all kinds of classes. They also published noites related to 361, 383 400 413 and 440 engines.

The documents were published by Chrysler engineering for the team to use, but sooner or later they got out and were everywhere.

I have not looked anywhere to check out newer stuff, but I do know that Citroen did the same for all their engines except the 2CV and the Maseraiti-produced V6.

Odd note. One guy in Australia who owns/owned a small aircraft repair/restoiration once balanced hisolder Citroen motor to 12000 rpm because he could.

This was in the days before you Tube and so it was often the talk of the different annual meets after someone visited the guy and made an audiotape of the conversation and the engine running.

Needless to say, very smooth.

Good luck on finding the source of info, Tom, it might be out there somewhere and you just haven't seen it yet.

I just did some reading about it and it appears that for perfect balance the weight of the crank appears to be pretty much dictated by the weight of the piston and rods....?

Add in the weight of the flywheel/flexplate and the vibration dampner and you got it.

Would those effect a neutrally balanced crank?
