Had a little conversation today with the guys I got the rack from and it looks like they will replace it.

There are no new racks anymore, all are rebuilds, even from Volvo at $850,-. And besides the Volvo ones they are not that good. It's like playing the lotto...you could be lucky.

Sounds like good news overall. How much of a pita is it to replace?

Yep, they gave me a new one. Like always I took my sweet time, but I could have done it in a hour if I had both racks present. It's pretty straight forward.

^ Only takes an hour? What tools are needed? I would have guessed, and obviously incorrectly, that this would be a major task.

It's pretty easy if everything works in your favor. Unfortunately the tie rod end got stripped so it took me a while before I could install a new one.

All standard hand tools: three bolts on the protection plate, two bolts on the rack, two small bolts on the steering column and two connections for the fluid. With measuring it, so it's not to much out of alignment, checking, flushing the fluid, checking again; it can be done in three hours. I would think a Volvo mechanic would do it in a hour.

I thought it was going to be hard too, that's why I was looking for other solutions...
