Well the part is programmed, not designed to do it in Mercedes and BMW's case. My prius was seamless, the battery would give the instant ooomph and the starter would kick on the motor for more power or cruising. A very smooth operation.
I've had 2 rentals with it. A Cadillac ATS and BMW 3 series. Both were clunky, jerky, awkward. Like Jorn mentioned it made me think something had broken. I would disable the feature every time I started it.

What is the difference between being programmed and designed?

The thing that concerns me a bit is the C250 that I have ad the feature in 2012 or 2013 but for the 2014 yr (mine) the feature is deleted. The GLK has it (2013) not sure about later models though. I don't know if it was deleted because of issue or popularity.

I'd be worried about that engine in general......

I take it as a system that may function in its intended manner, but really isn't designed or built to a sufficiently durable standard. The average built-to-a-cost starter motor, intended to handle x number of engine starts, could be placed into start/stop service, but how long will it last?

Check the rules for your class before spending anything on this.
One innovation that saved fuel was a fan blade on the alternator. As the NASCAR car drove around the track the rushing air caused the fan blade on the alternator to spin. By not running the belt drive on the alternator it saved a bit of friction and a bit of weight due to the plastic fan being a tiny bit lighter than the fan belt. But it was not legal under the NASCAR rules. And while at idle the car drew on the battery. This would not be an option for street cars due to the start and stop nature of traffic. But if you could cut the weight of a starter from your race car....... It is worth looking into. |

I know that on the 2.7 EcoBoost Ford designed the engine to somehow keep the oil circulating through the valve train and turbos for a few seconds after shutting off and it can take 20 minutes to all drain back into the crankcase.

Before I-5 was built in San Diego county, (1965) ALL the Del Mar horse race traffic went down Highway 101 through all the towns and all the lights between Del Mar & LA. If the lights to cross 101 just turned red for you, people would shut off their engines, get out and talk with their friends/others while waiting. There was sooo much traffic to the races that the lites stayed green for them for it seems like 10 minutes, till we could cross 101.
Anyway, this thread brought back old memories, , , , -c-

I'm fine with the start/stop technology (other than knowing I'll probably go through batteries and starters more often...)
But what worries me is if you're stopped and need to get out of the way in a hurry. How fast will the car start and engage gears if you gun it? Say you are turning left and there is oncoming traffic coming at high speed. You have your left turn signal on. For some reason you need to complete the left turn (ie. there is a giant truck barrelling down the road behind you, and you can see in your rearview mirror that you're about to be hit at high speed) In a normal car, you can hit the gas hard, make a fast left, and be out of the way of both directions of traffic. How fast will these cars go from shut off > running > into gear > moving quickly? Even a 1 second delay would seem too much in this scenario!

Instant movement in a Prius or insight because of the hybrid system. The battery provides power as well as the motor.
In my Cadillac rental's case it was too slow for the situation given above. The starter would engage the moment you started to depress the brake pedal, I could do one Mississippi before I had power.
