Small diesel engine suggestion

Howdy folks.

I'm looking for suggestions for a small simple water cooled diesel engine suitable for genset/cogen use, that would be tolerant to alternative fuels and not cost a bundle to acquire or work on. I know we have a lot of smart people here, I thought I'd check with you folks for engines that might fit this role.

My thoughts were Lister or Listeroid 6/1, Changfa 195 or other Yanmar clones. Possibly the Isuzu C201 or other reefer engine, although that's more hp/more complexity than I'd wanted.

Eventual goal would be an alternative fuel genset/cogen for the house/shop.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Find yourself an old Perkins from a mobile welding rig. Danged things run forever, will almost run on water and couldn't be simpler to repair.

It has been predicted that used auto batteries, beat down to under 80% capacity, will eventually flood the market and be suitable for home power storage apps.

A Cat C1.1 or C2.2 would be a beautiful choice but probably not cheap...

Interesting read about the Perkins engines. Thanks again for the recommendation.
