Dead cottonwoods are a serious health hazard. When they start dropping widowmakers it's time for the whole tree to go before it just up and falls over. Firewood? Yuck. Burning cottonwood smells like you threw a wet dog on the fire.

They are. One at the end of our block fell on a perfectly calm morning about 25 years ago. Snapped a big telephone pole like it was a toothpick. There's one about 50' tall towering over a house on the next block. Personally, I would not live in the house until it was removed. Way too dangerous.

Yup, going to be fun. Neighbor lady is allergic to them as well, she's THRILLED that they're coming down. I'd heard cottonwood makes mediocre firewood but hadn't heard about the smell, if it's that bad I'll post a "free wood" ad on CL and be done with it.

I agree, I wouldn't buy cottonwood as firewood. But it's here, and it DOES burn..........and my main heat is a heat pump, fire is just for whenever we want, not for a need.

Since you seem to think this is an important issue, I will answer straight up.

I planned to talk to him about getting the other elms down when i came back after lunch. when I did he had gone. He is very tough to get hold of for some reason.

Now I'm on vacation so will talk to him about it when back. None of the three elm trees is more than 20' from my house and they all are maybe 75' tall or so so getting them gone is a priority for me.

But I do have a lot of other things I am dealing with at the moment too.

We've found that cottonwood doesn't smell any worse burning than any other wood. It's definitely different, but it's not bad. I also expect this to get significantly better as the wood has a chance to dry, this was just a couple VERY green pieces burned to test the smell. Would sure suck to be looking at 3+ cords of hard work only to find out next year that it smells too bad to be burned.

Last fall the lady who lives behind me came over and asked me to remove a tree which was leaning over toward her property. I looked it over and decided it was not likely to fall on her house and declined to remove it. She offered to pay for it and I said ok but I want to have the remover working for me, for liability reasons, if he is on my property. Before I could get it arranged she had hired a guy who came and removed it. I sent her an email saying I did not approve nor appreciate her doing this against my wishes.

Today I was in my house and heard chain saws running hear by. I went out and found she had a guy working on a tree on my property. They had cut it down and were on my property cutting it up. I ran them off.

I then sent her an email reiterating all of the above and told her to stay off my property or suffer action on my part.

I am thinking to file a suit for damages. It was not a desired breed of tree but it was mine and provided shade and shelter to my property.

Of course we don't get hurricanes here, thank goodness. We do have tornadoes but they don't make the wide swath hurricanes do.
