Lazy at work? Sheikh says you are fired!

This guy is one of the few reasons I keep liking Dubai as a place to live.

Sheikh Mohammed orders retirement of 9 senior officials at Dubai Municipality | The National

Short story: Dubai Sheikh shows up in surprise visit to government offices; a lot of the office heads are not there. Next thing they know, they are "asked to retire".

I'm currently just down the road from Dubai... the summer heat finally seems like its on the slow decline...

I love this also: every CEO (this guy isnt a CEO, but as a metaphor) should periodically walk around the offices and see what people are up to. In my limited view, The biggest compliant of workers is "leadership doesn't know whats going on". The previous article seemed to say that this wasn't the first time that the chief executive did a walkthrough....

I don't see much "out in town" except the tourist areas, but for a country of people coming out of the dark ages with a lot of money (and their HUGE non-local labor force), they seem to be on a much better path than their peers.

you just saw one side of the story - UAE nationals are never fired but asked to retire or something like that.

aliens working lower jobs like construction are actually fired from the job for just taking a break from the hot sun and sitting down to drink a glass of water.

this kind of situation is great as long as you agree with the shiekh and agree all his moves are the right moves.

100% true, although I have heard of a Sheikh who was kicked out of the country, the one to gift the land for our museum. All his real estate properties were then placed under a government board.

The difference between locals and foreigners is obvious, especially if the Emiratis count on plenty of wasta (influence). However, I have read plenty of cases of trials where locals have been found guilty of crimes against foreigners, so I am beginning to think that the UAE is trying to gain some credibility among the rest of the Gulf countries.

Agree! So far, Sheikh Mohammed has been doing pretty well. Not long ago the Dubai government wanted to pass a law against the use of VPNs but was soon taken back due to its unpopularity. Compared to Spain, were we have similar "gag laws", I use my same way of voting: if I don't like it, I leave it. The only country I have loved enough to become politically active is the USA.
