chain in engine
I have a M116 engine (i think) and it has the 6 foot chain running through it. Whenever I need to get her going hard like up a steep hill or something, I worry about this chain breaking. It has the double row chain! Do these things break easily or no if maintained?

Chains should be changed every 100k miles. Replace rails and tensioner also.

If you are really worried about it, or it is really old, have it checked for stretch.

It was changed 2 years ago and has not reached 100 000k yet. I think it has only about 40 000k on it.

40k on the chain. If you have changed the oil, then there is nothing to worry about.

If your 3.8 liter has the double chains, I wouldn't worry about it breaking or stretching (unlike the crap single row chains that were original equipment from 1981 to 1983 in 3.8 liter Benzes, but yours has been changed to the double) at any significant interval...

Does anybody know if the '85 500SL (Euro) has either the single or double chain installed as standard?
Thanks,

I'm quite sure all the 5.0 liter M117 V-8s had the double chain. I think it was just an early 3.8 liter M116 issue.
