Ditto Buffalo. Passed by a closed Bethlehem Steel mill that must have been two or three miles long next to the interstate up there. Saw somewhere in there one pickup truck and no other sign of life. Probably a security guy of some sort. August 2003.

Years ago I knew a man who was a/the plant manager for USS in Gary. Used to date his daughter.

I knew I had read something a while back about Gary. I had to look it up to see if I was remembering it right.

The town was a company town for US Steel. I think the opening shot of The Blues Brothers was a long shot of the plant in Gary.

But the plant closed and that wiped out the town. Now there is nothing left.

I could take you to many towns in Oklahoma and Texas that suffered the same fate when the oil wells went dry. There are some incredible buildings, mostly churches, that are empty and miles from nowhere. Once there was a large community in these places. Now there is usually just a gas station/burger joint/etc. and some really big empty buildings.

One of these towns is about to make a comeback. An oil billionaire took a liking to a place and bought much of the downtown. He is currently renovating a few of the buildings for offices.

Jobs are what it takes to keep a place going, and when a place becomes dependent on one company they are just a place waiting to die.

This Global economy crap is for the birds , we need to care for our economy.Why can't leaders see,when america works,the government collect taxes,and deficits are paid down. It should be treasonist for a u.S. company to operate in another country. There products should have high tariffs.

It is sad to go through places where large plants are closed and obviously have been for a long time now. Some of those places have managed to adjust to the new realities better than others.

I all too well remember driving through smaller towns late at night when even the smaller industrial companies where running three shifts. That was long ago now.

Ford has stated they are moving all north American production of small cars to Mexico. At the same time stating there will be no loss of jobs. To me if you move the production out of the country you have to be bleeding jobs as well.

Indeed; and they also have strong labor laws and unions. We can learn a lot of lessons from Germany (well except for the unchecked immigration part).

Occasionally I will go into World Market just to peek around. It's amazing how much better German consumer goods are; take something as simple as a chocolate bar. The ingredients are straight-forward and actually the bar even tastes great as it's not too sweet. Then you look at the crap we get here in the U.S. and realize why we have spiking rates of obesity, heart disease and cancer.

Same thing with pharmaceuticals; the German approach is to adopt some elements of holistic healing into their healthcare and focus on treating the cause of an ailment rather than the symptoms. Here we end up with 10 different drugs for one ailment; 1 to treat the symptoms of the original issue, and 9 others to treat the side effects of all the drugs.

The list goes on. Truly depressing stuff.
