how do i pay a roofing contractor

My house's roof is original and needs replacement. I found a roofing guy via Angies list to do the work. the tab is $7500.

Question- what is the procedure to pay this guy without getting screwed?

I would hate to give him $7500 upfront and never see him again.

is there an escrow type service for this?

never pay up front, even a deposit.A good contractor will have funds,or credit to order materials.Pay with check so you can have proof of date.If you use shingles, arch. type are heavier and better. To save money you can go up to 3 layers thick. So you don't have to pay,to remove old ones each time.

I agree with the payment portion, but on the three layers, it may be more than the roof structure can safely handle. I'd pay an Architect or Engineer to calculate the safe load before putting up a third layer.

Or just strip off the two layers and start afresh.

I had a roof done a few months ago. Personally I wouldn’t put a 2nd layer on as it’s a less than ideal solution. The roofer pulled off the original roofing, found a few sheets of plywood to replace along the way then did the new roof. Took them 3 days total.

I paid them with an AMEX card after the roof was complete. I love AMEX for the ultra high customer service they provide. But in any event, use a CC as it provides a layer of recourse in the event of a problem that cash/check doesn’t provide. If they want to charge extra for using a CC tell them you’ll find another roofer.

So you checked and all roofs everywhere are structurally capable of adding a third layer?

I still recommend getting it checked by a licensed professional.

Agree with no payment up front. In the three areas of the US that I've lived so far, 3 layers is max according to code. From what I understand, that id dependent on pitch of roof and construction. With that being said, I'd check with your local rules and regs, and see what it says.

You will void the warranty on most architectural shingles if you try to put them on top of another layer. Either go cheap and slap a layer of cheap ones on it, or do it right - strip off the old and put on arch shingles, they'll probably outlast you.

No shingles will last around here, not even architectural shingles. Too much hail. If you want a roof to outlast you, put on a metal roof. I put one on our house 27 years ago. Still doing fine. Outlasted two shingle roofs on our other properties.

You can't find a white roofing crew around here. If Trump builds his wall there wont be any new roofs.

We paid two pro shinglers $2k to shingle our roof. $500 a day to put up the sheathing and trusses. The rest was labor. With 2 guys slinging shingle, and 2 strong guys bringing the shingle up we got about 16 squares done in 18 hours.

The truck driver was a pro man. The guy actually dumped the load on the proverbial dime. There is no driveway across the street so you can imagine how he got the truck into that position in the first place.

They got the trusses and sheathing up in one day and and shingle on in 18 hours. So two days of work.

Why did you need trusses?
