It's already running properly after several days of intense labor .

Still plugging away at it ~ to - day I took the original date coded (May '59) wheels to be powder coated ~ that'll give me a week with it up on safety stands and no wheels, easier to access things .

Adriel : nice photo of the baby ! .

I wish I had any photos of my Son when he was a baby ~ i have one old photo from our Canadian trip when he was 12 or so....

Nate, glad you are making progress.

That is me... Most of the pictures before the divorce were lost when my mother quit paying the rent on the storage unit. Sadly, very, very, few taken of the other two, something about the first year of the first born.

Shortly before my Father died he showed me some old photos that included me in a Sailor Suit at two or three years old.... we're talking about SIXTY YEARS ago

Why the hell did I never see these before ?! .

Then of course all the photos vanished as soon as he died and my Siblings rummaged his house, life's a b*tch sometimes, I just make the best of things .

I tried to post more VW photos but it says " file too big " even though they're the same size as the others I posted....

.

I worked on it more this morning as the sun came up, got the turn signals, brake lights and horn all working (rat's nest under the dash is better now) , then fiddled with the new grey rubber floor mats and re - installed the old seat belts I took out and hand washed the other day....

I was a VW Mechanic for decades and can do this stuff in my sleep .

I am loving it and would like to share the photos if I but could .

I even got some static out of the 1959 Motorola 'TRANSISTORIZED' AM radio ~ I'll have to take it apart and see what I can do .

It was cool this morning @ 50° F, I pressed and released the throttle, turned the key and it puttered into life, n smoke, not a miss nor cough .

I can't wait to get the wheels back so I can drive it .

My Brother and Sister are getting better, so not included.

What file type are the photographs? I have had issues more with TIFF here as larger than JPEG, but sometimes have to re-export a smaller JPEG.

Also, you can only put in five at a time.

If there is wires under the dash, they are not factory, as factory wires are forward of the dash.

Really looks like a lot of progress by what you are telling.

Maybe you can some day help via the internet with the Squareback.

First though, need to get her on a frame machine and strait again (darn stupid woman driving a Nissan Sentra that fled the scene). Got a real mess going on with the electrical wires.

Why did you go with grey mats? I thought original was black.

Hopefully something simple.

Got a funny: Dad used a portable radio since purchasing the Beetle instead of an in dash.

Not good to let engines not warm up before shutting down, remember?

Amazing how easy a well tuned engine starts. I eliminated now two cold start valves (one on the Squareback and the other on the 280TE) and no more troublesome starting. Today the Mercedes started so quick didn't realize turned the key over, literally just bumped it and came to life.

How long until the wheels come back?

Did you have a radial tyre bead put on? Or going to just risk without? Dad did for ages as then didn't know better. Now wonder since found they make tubes for radials whether that address it?

You are making me miss driving the Squareback. But no bread to get her straitened. Don't even have it for insurance, so will have to drive only for medical emergencies.

My last Typ III was a 1971 Fastback in Beige with a sun roof and the same Bosch D-jetronic yours has, and an automatic tranny ~ I loved that car and regret ever selling it .

I may be able to be helpful with Tech advice to you .

They're dead simple and the brain box rarely ever goes bad .

The fuel pump relay is problematic , we used to just by pass it and that's a SERIOUS FIRE ISSUE so don't do it .

They tell me my wheels will be ready Friday 11/25, we'll see .

Yes, radials, I know about the raised bead lip but I've also driven several hundred thousand miles with radials on original rims including a rollover (my fault) and numerous curb smacks etc. , never any problems .

Attached is a (poor) photo of the stock rat's nest VW wiring .

A wise person told me in about 1964 " you can pick your seat but you cannot pick your Family"......

I remember that a cousin of mine bought a new Sun Bug back in the Seventies. I always liked that car.

I bought several as they were easy to sell and the graphics stood up well to the sun .

The date is wrong, as everyone lost everything to the Great Samba Crash. I.I.R.C., bought her in October of 2006. Good grief, that is over ten years ago.

Interesting, had a '69 Beige Fastback and this is a '71 Marina Blau Sunroof.

Regret selling is why I have refused to sell Baby (P.O.'s name for the Squareback) (which works with Baby Blue and maybe Dylan's song).

Once had an issue with the relay. I know from a friend who lost a friend in a vehical fire due to the fuel pump spewing fuel into the fire not to.

Over all, the D Jetronic has been good, it is the main wiring, especially the under dash. Also the fuel pump was rebuilt by an individual, leaked still, so got a new fuel pump to install.

Did have one transistor leg rust out in the brain.

Good to hear actual experience that really shows what seemed to be true: radials don't just pop off the non-beaded rims.

That is stock? If so, then why the curled wires?

Looks better than Dad's as the joy riders hacked and rummaged to get it hot wired.

So true! Will have to remember that great advice about picking a seat.

Now Sun Bugs are super rare and fetch ridiculous prices.

I love that apple green that came on some of the special edition Super Beetles.

IIRC the first year (? '73 ?) Sun Bug was only in yellow but I had a later one in gold or bronze color...

In the 1980's I could sell them for $2,500 + making them worthwhile to save fro the crusher where i tend to get most of my vehicles ~ at or just before the crusher .

I had no idea they're worth anything special these days .

I remember brilliant day glo green but not apple green Supers .

VW Wiring is dead simple and color coded to boot ~ it uses a specific DIN color/numbering code too .

99 % of the time, electrical problems are DPO/DPM caused and so easily rectified if you don't go far afield .

The curly cued wire in my '59 is the Motorola radio's power wire ~ someone crudely spliced in a new fuse holder and did this to shorten the wire run, a common thing dating back to the 1930's ~ I often do this to the points wire between the dizzy and ignition coil so it looks nice .

I'm skittish about The Samba as I picked up a nasty v*rus there years ago

I don't remember a yellow, but a golden bronze. So '70s.

That isn't the issue, it was that the wires don't match the color wiring diagram in the book (now the new ones are black and white).

Sue Kelly bought the Squareback from the original owner in September I.I.R.C.. I do know it was 1972. Supposedly a tourist delivery, but no way to prove now that Birth Certificates no longer available. She did most of the work, but had a push button ignition installed when a replacement '71 only ignition tumblers couldn't be found, or was the switch. Anyway, she did most and only took it in for really big things, like engine replacement.

I also do that on the points wire, using a pencil. Agree, makes neater.

That is the first time been on theSambe in ages. It just gone to the wayside after we lost Russ Wolfe to cancer. Think Tram still gets on, but I have his email address.

Yes, rather be driving than constantly breaking parts because too much horsepower/torque. I used to be foolish and want a little more, but grew up, then later purchased a 300TD-T.
