One lap of america

I just got back from Grissom after working the one lap of America event. The range of cars was impressive, from an older Volvo wagon, to a 70 something firebird, numeros vettes and 911s a Viper or two, a Mitsubishi Evo (It was a four door with 4wd and a turbo motor).

The one that really caught my eye was a heavily modified 911 with ultra wide body, a deep splitter on front and a huge wing on back.

It was a lovely sunny day but windy and cool if not in the sun but I had a great time, my hip was not a problem.

The Evo posted fastest time of the day.

Oh yes, I met Brock Yates.....(Yikes, I said to myself, he's dead).....Junior.

He introduced himself and I did a double take then realized he resembled his father quite a bit. Nice fellow who came up to me and thanked me for our club running such an efficient event. I thanked him and pointed to our long time organizer Raleigh Boreen and said he was responsible for it.

Wow, sounds like a great time!

I am just finishing one lap of Western Europe. I have been here three weeks, coming home today. Been to: Brussels, Bruges, the Rhein, Prague and Vienna, the Black Forest, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Italy, French Riviera, and had incredible stops along the way.Lots of autobahn driving. I'm will provide more details later.

I put 5,600 kilometers on a Renault Kadjar with a six speed manual. It could cruise about 190, 210 on a good stretch, and handled well, but it was really thrifty on fuel. Got over 40 MPG when I did the math. I never thought Renault could build a car worth driving.

Two days in Prague and two days in Vienna with LOTS of excellent classical music all four days. I heard "Eine Kleine Nacht Musik," one of my favorite Mozart pieces, three times. WONDERFUL.

This may very well be my last trip to Europe and it was maybe my best.

Sounds like fun! When we were in Italy in 2001 I rented a REnault 9 pass. van. It had a little four turbodiesel with 5 speed manual. It drove like a car, had reasonably good acceleration and would cruise at about 75 with ease. Decent fuel economy too.

Our visions of Renault were formed back in the sixties when french cars in general were not really up to the American long distance high speed driving. My first car was a 1960 Simca aronde. A nice looking, excellent handling comfortable little rear wheel drive four door. It was a real pleasure to drive but the engine and tranny were very very weak.

Too bad Peugeot is gone from these shores. I really liked their 504, 505 and 604 models.

They are handsome cars. I had an 85(?) wagon back about 20 years ago for a short while. Lovely driving car but getting parts was a nightmare. I sold it and got my money back quickly after a few parts debacles.

There is a one minute video called Citroen: Timeless Innovation. Take a look, it's on YouTube.
