Do y'all remember the movie by that title? Came out in late '60's or early '70's. About a white guy who woke up black. I'd like to see it again.

I believe there was also a hit song by that name. The singer of the song and or writer made a small pile of cash on it but never had another hit. He took the money and bought a 289 Cobra which last I heard he still has.

He told the story about buying it in a magazine article. He went into the dealer and nobody would take him seriously because he is black. So he came back the next day with enough cash to make the purchase.

He had to take a friend because he did not know how to drive a stick (or maybe not at all).

Herbie Hancock! Among others, don't know who the original was but herbie did an interesting take on it. I remember playing it in middle school, a favorite song on drums in 7th grade. But I've got herbie hancock on vinyl haha.

Hancock wrote "Watermelon Man" recorded it at least twice himself, it was covered by others including Mongo who's version made it into the top 10 in the pop charts (Herbie's versions only broke into the top 100). Mongo's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Herbie Hancock is a prolific writer and player who has enjoyed great success across the music universe as a band member, a band leader and as a soloist.

Very cool - never realized he wrote it in 62 (And recorded it with Dexter Gordon no less!). I thought Mongo's version was the original and then herbie did a take on it on head hunters some years later (which is what I've got).

I expected to hear some complaints about it being stereotypical with the watermelon and a black artist etc. ....but nothing.
