The new BMW M3 is such a fine car....

Or not.

If you want to read the stories of many E46 M3 premature engine fails, go no further and click this link.

http://townhall-talk2.edmunds.com/WebX?14@40.vtZVb8xbbFz^1@.ef0be9e/0

Now, who was the guy who talked about BMW reliability being superior to MB?

Disclaimer: I do like older BMWs. Anything with the bomb-proof 3.5 liter iron-block Six. Like the E28 535i. These M3s are horrid, though.

If you buy an M3 your not expecting reliabilty you expect power, power and more power. IMO
I would love an M3 for a second or 3rd car.

For your amusement, check out the sound of a broken E46 engine at 13,800 miles. Apparently, the noise is coming from the bottom end, not the head.. :-O

Nooooo!!

Plenty of people are driving powerful cars with highly strung engines, and I imagine plenty of them aren't waiting 'till the oil temperature is up before they rev it, you wouldn't expect their engines to go bang.. - even TVR wouldn't manufacture a car that crazy
No car should ever explode like these are, at such low mileage, no matter how badly they're treated (save removing all the oil, or over-revving beyond the limiter), especially a BMW.
They'll sort it eventually though, hope they stop being so *****ty to the customers tho

I know that an M Series BMW is going to be more intensive on maintenance than a standard Bimmer. That said, engine failures shouldn't be happening at this low of a mileage.

Looks like the most reliable supercars out there in terms of engine durability are the 500E and the E55. But then, we all knew that here, of course.

Isn't that tap-tap sound from valve?? Last time I heard, it's because the valves are not getting adequate lubrication... and same desiel sound happens on some early build E39 M5s....

I would take an E46 M3 in a second.

I would also treat it like a car of that class deserves to be.

I'm surprised I'm saying this but, I am finding greater attention to build quality and detail in the new BMW products compared with Mercedes-Benz.

The 3 and C series are the best example of this.

The 5 series clearly beats the E Class aswell....

My next car will be a 2000 C43 AMG in white on black or tan....

After that purchase though......BMW M????

-Until the engine blew up?

I would also treat it like a car of that class deserves to be.

-Other people obviously do. The engines still blow up. (not all of course) You should take a look at the disturbing thread I originally posted.

-It's easy to say when you're sitting in a reliable in-line six Mercedes and wishing it was an M3 with 333 hp under the hood. Would you say the same if the engine blew up in the M while you were driving it?

I like the red lighting it looks cool untill you drive more than 3 or 4 hours at night. The 500 had a great clean light nice and easy to read just like durning the day.
