The last of the best?
Which benz is considered to be the last of the over engineered benzes? Is it the 140? I thought they started thier cost cutting in 95 and the 140 lasted until 99.

They made a few modifications to the W140 midway through its production run to cut costs a bit, the things were too expensive before and Mercedes wanted to boost sales. When it was originally engineered, I think that cost was not much of a consideration for the engineers, they just wanted to build the best car they could.

I think the last of them would be the w123 and w126 IMO The early w140's had a lot of trouble from what I've heard.

Best is so subjective.
To me last of the "best" would be the last of the hand built production cars - the W108's and W109's. I can just see Hans und Franz piecing a car together over a day or two, just to watch it roll out the door to parts unknown. Much more impressive than whirr whirr, buzz, buzzz, buzzt.
