dash cam suggestions?

tell me about your dash camera recorder and/or what you've used and how you like it.

There's a pretty extensive dash cam thread in DD. Might want to look at that.

G1W, it does fine in the day and poorly at night. Software is lacking, but 95% of the time it's fine. Overheats in the summer easily(no AC in the car).

Once I bought the cam, crazy stuff stopped happening (this is good)

What's the downside to just buying a mount and using your phone? Assuming you neither make nor take calls while driving, which all of us agree is really dumb and risky and would never ever do.

I think storage for the video probably takes up a lot of space and I would assume that a dash cam might have a wide angle lens.

I'd rather not fiddle with setting up my phone every time I get in the car. A properly installed dashcam will come on when the car is started - all I'd have to do is hop in, start up, and drive normally.

I'd love to know how, actually.

Pre dash cam:

Inattentive driver hitting stopped traffic at ~45, didn't touch the brakes.
F350 dump truck being chased by 3 cops cars at ~75mph. The dump truck somehow had a respectable lead
Car fire on the shoulder
Cross traffic running reds a good minute after a light change
Bumper clippings by the inattentive locals
etc.

Post dash cam:
Occasional weird car, usual jerks in traffic (but nothing on fire)

Well, just don't get a used Chicago PD unit, it seems they fail to get audio 100%

Some of those Powerstroke's have an amazing amount of power before the oil cooler plugs up or the head gaskets blow.

Speaker phone calls through the car stereo definitely. I also use my phone all the time as GPS for work. A gizmo as useful at a variety of tasks as a smart phone is wasted as a dash cam, plus as said above will use up a lot of memory and definitely battery.

I still need a dashcam for my little work appointment car, which is threatened daily by the great unwashed. I need simpler=better results to happen, and one that shoots backwards also. Just yesterday was almost rear ended by a moron in a jeep who ended up in the median. Fortunately he has reasonable maneuver skills and there was a place to go at the time.

Just buy two and be done with it, they're cheaper than any insurance deductible!

I'm putting two in the Wifey's car, since she gets to drive on the Baldimurr Deathway (tm) every day and has had people try to swap paint more than a few times.

Resurrecting this thread because I am now in the market. (Already looked at the thread referenced above on DD and see no recent updates.)

Anyone care to suggest a dash cam that is:
  • easy to use
  • can be mounted semi-permanently to the back side of the mirror on my 2014 W166
  • is relatively inconspicuous
  • has great picture quality

Can these be had for around $100? Should I look for one with a rear facing camera as well?
