Probably not the Duluth info that was wanted. I've not been there but have been curious. That there is one north and remote spot, I mean at the far tip of the Great Lakes?
I did a small Google Earth tour of Duluth some years back. Clicking on the photos icons are interesting as well as street view.

I went again to do some Google earth touring. I do not only the photos but also the street view thing. Pretty wild, you can do a virtual drive down a street. It's an interesting look at a town. I'll never make it to a lot of these places so just seeing the architecture and the flavor of the streets all leading down to the lake is interesting. Saw pics of some grand old buildings in Duluth. At one point I maneuvered out onto the middle of a bridge on Lake St. You can turn to see the 360 view. Wild stuff, looking out to 'sea' on Lake Superior. That is a tough looking shoreline. Not sand but large boulders. What I saw anyway. The only Great Lake I've experienced is Lake Ontario, I was visiting a friend in the small college town of Oswego, NY on the shore. Pretty impressive, I was so naive I didn't realize that you can't see the other side. Maybe if there was a Mt. Rainier sized peak near the opposite shore you could. This was Sept., so the water was not bad for swimming surprisingly. Might be little colder in Superior near Duluth however.

Ice Racing
We used to do ice racing on frozen ponds / lakes in New England in the early 1960's, the local Po'boys would use chains, the guys who had decent factory jobs wuold buy a pair of re capped studded snow tires and have at it .
Light cars always did far better, no real need for a V-8 either . Still waiting for some feedback on Duluth........

I'm thinking Duluth is off the beaten track ... really off. I have an odd interest in spending at least one winter in such a place. But unless I could afford to hire some old boy local to bring me up to speed whenever I had trouble, could be pretty rough.
On some of the Google Earth photos you can see some big ass ships. I used to hop freights in various parts of the US, is quite a trip, you see a view of the nation that's not often seen, well, unless you take AmTrack a lot. Would love to ride from Duluth to the Atlantic. I think I would, might be some serious sea sickness available. I recall some large ass rolling waves on Lake Ontario.

Traveling & Touristing
Good for you ! .
America is a really big place and few take the time to look at it as you and I have done . A famous scribe once said "to really see any town walk it's back alleys" . Since the late 1970's there have been a lot of psychopaths riding the rails and killing other riders so be careful . I like to ride the bus and canoe, also ways to see another side of anywhere I go .

Most all of my hopping freights was done in the 70s. Couple of times in the early 80s. I have heard that it’s gotten pretty dangerous. I and another fellow had a sketchy encounter in ‘81. Even back in the 70s, I quickly realized that the guys who looked way too rough to have much luck hitchhiking would ride the rails.
