The appliance guy said General Electric. Some afterthoughts. Buying appliances in a staggered fashion may mean you do not eventually get a run of breakdowns in a smaller time frame. For example the wife may want all the appliances replaced in the kitchen with stainless steel fronts at the same time. Chances are you may have a lot of breakdowns in a shorter time frame. Plus any appliance guy with a decent attitude is usually a good source. To tell your what brands are far more problematic than others. Not a lot of sense asking average people. They are not unreasonably biased. Plus have no real ideal of how competing brands are really doing. Reviews are much the same unfortunately. People in general do not want to say I made a bad choice. Unless the product is a total disaster. For example I can really recommend my wives dishwasher for the cleaning ability. The manufacturer also claims less breakdowns than any other brand. Yet it went down at one year and four months. The service guy quotes 400 dollars parts labor and taxes to replace the control board. A distinct possibility if the non detectable fault occurs again. Even though just a year and four months ago I can only remember paying about 600 Canadian plus sales tax. It has better racks and a stainless tub though. Plus this super insulation. I also do not know if the prices on appliances will seriously increase over time. Really high line stuff is already up there I suspect. |

I have heard the name of that refrigerator in Canada. Never seen one though. White Westinghouse has been working hard to establish a monopoly position. Or at least increase the percentage of the market they have. They have quite a few labels out there I believe. For example the wives dishwasher is labeled whirlpool an old RCA owned label I thought. I am pretty sure it is white Westinghouse as is Maytag now. Plus several others perhaps. Most appliances stores have stopped keeping back up inventory. Also most so called sales are directed by the manufacturer. There is not a lot of margin in appliance sales. So if you find a model on sale you will find it at the same price at the same time in many other outlets. You want sticker shock? There are pretty obscure brands that can do that for you. |

O.K., SWMBO had me take her to a big box home repair store to - day, she wants "graphite" (co$t$ more than gray) colored washer & drier, she was looking at Samsung units, about $4,500 for the pair (
) .Lots and lots of electronics, I don't really trust that having heard so many horror stories of $800 + boards . Then we looked at the larger pair of LG brand, larger and about $2,200 for the pair . I have zero idea what to do, in the back row they also have the old fashioned typ with a timer and simple knob for $450 . I miss my old 1964 Maytag , it stood outside for the 1970's & 1980's and never missed a beat .

It is just the new world and the overall economy of consumer buying. It may not be planned but in effect we just replace things on a faster cycle these days. Actually the economy itself needs this. A lot is just marketing as well. The newer appliance may have many variations or choice of cycles. Yet in general the average consumer uses few if not only one of them. As mentioned earlier I am fortunate to know an appliance service guy. I trust his advice and really heed it. For what it is worth one daughter has a set of top end LG washer and dryer. It looks like a light show on the front of at least one of them.. I believe they are four years old now with no issues so far. That I am aware of. The wife wants a new refrigerator. With the freezing compartment on the bottom. This feature makes sense to me. Many refrigerators get replaced because on some brands the shelving basically falls apart. So once again I will drop by and talk to my appliance service guy. People are highly mobile today and many let their appliances go rather than pay to move them long distances.. I have noticed in his appliance service shop retail area a lot of them for resale are not very old. His prices are actually reasonable as well. When I was there for the part for the wives washing machine recently. Six of the twelve or so used washing machines had no electronics. Your choice at 200-220 apiece on a cash deal with no sales tax if he knows you. No banged up junk either and they all have a reasonable warranty. You pick them up though as he is too busy to deliver. Can quality be restored? He picks certain models of older Maytag washing machines and essentially restores them. You will pay for these today though. He mentioned to me that he wished he could get more. As many of his customers are in my age group. We know how good they were and they lasted really well.. It was a Maytag washing machine that after twenty five years service I figured was worn out. I had no ideal at the time just what the average replacemetns where like. Maytag by then was over. You could buy a white westinghouse product with a maytag label though. Just because you see a turnable knob on a new washing machine does not mean it does not have electronics. Selling good quality used appliances was only a sideline for him twenty years ago. Now it is a substantial business. He also has a large new and used appliance parts business. When guys like him retire or die. I wonder if it will be the end of an era. l Last edited by barry12345; 10-01-2019 at 01:05 PM. |

Thanx Barry ;
I have similar thoughts / concerns . It saddens me that the washer we threw out had never been used even once . I watched all those roll off bins of our things get filled & dragged away thinking 'even if SWMBO doesn't want that stuff it's still better than what many we know have . We gave away a nice leather sofa to one of her older girlfriends, I told her how to clean the smoke off, she did and is still well pleased with it . As far as older appliances dirt cheap, go to county estate auctions ~ I get good stuff there for less than pennies on the dollar .

GE exited the appliance business five years ago. They sold the product line and licensed use of the name and logo to the Chinese company Haier. Everything is made in China today. If you dig under the covers, you'll find that many of the old names are owned or private labeled by the same company. I know that virtually all the portable dehumidifiers sold in the US today have Haier internals under the covers. |

Similar whirlpool basically to what we got the last time. Chinese parts assembled in America. Washes dishes very well. We pay more as the Canadian dollar is worth less. Plus they limit the warranty to one year here. No estimate of lifespan possible. Stainless tub rusts according to many reports. As I see it. If it lasts you five years it is only less than 2.00 a week. You have four years warranty.So that at least is your pretty much assured lifespan at least. I may decide not to do the four hundred dollar repair on ours if it becomes needed. We have gotten an average of ten years lifespan out of all the previous dishwashers. Only time will tell how long these ones will reasonably last. The electronic control board is 275.00 alone plus sales tax in Canada. |

This company Haier is really large and growing. Possibly cheapest flat screen televisions out there. They are into a lot of things. Every year we manufacture less and less in north America. There was a buy American program years ago. I do not think they did it well enough. Manufacturing has a value added component that any country cannot really afford to lose. It is not just the job loss as you lose manufacturing. It is the byproduct. Of the value added component as the wealth producer for a country. I have been undecided if there is any true replacement for it. North American governments where well aware of the potential problem. So launched a propaganda program that the service sector could replace it. Again over the longer term I also have questions about that. The standing joke was most could land up flipping hamburgers. In any event the fast food business has possibly become the largest single employment sector out there. At least in north America as a guess. Some franchised fast food chains have been showing some forms of stress. As the wife and myself drove past a coffee franchise she likes but had closed the doors. She asked me why? I just mentioned with todays overhead you have to sell a lot of coffee each and every hour to cover the overhead costs. They just were not busy enough. Plus they had real issues getting and keeping employees. The owners of these places in general do not work in them. Subway shut down about fifteen hundred places last year is another example. You cannot increase prices and demand grows at the same time. If demand remains in that scenario. It is the sign of a growing or strong economy. If it declines it may be indicating a reach too far. For the general economic conditions. I went on to explain that I just do not understand. Other countries to protect their value added component and jobs to some extent. Even in the face of the automation of production that is coming. They do not erect tariff barriers. They just do not allow the import of certain products. We should be doing the same with some of ours. I was hoping we could hold on to the manufacture of appliances as they are bulky to ship years ago for an example. You're spot on about the running of a franchise fast food outlet .
I had a cousin who entered the Foodmaker chain (home to Jack In The Box) at the very bottom and when he became the manager of a Ghetto JIB they hassled him endlessly with unrealistic monthly sales increases ~ you cannot increase sales 10 % every month forever yet someone in a corporate office far away insisted it be done or get fired ~ this in spite of his turning the store completely around, making it clean and comfortable as well as increasing sales . I was there late one night (past midnight) when several car loads of crips and bloods pulled in and began a gang fight in the parking lot.... Scary to say the least . The 1% wants everyone else to be serfs, not equal Citizens in any way .

....Neither have I and that's my point ~ why did SWMBO buy one in the first place when she'd never use it nor would I ? .
Now she's purchased another new one to replace the old/new/unused/burned up one.......

Their is a bias against dishwashers by many women. Generally speaking a lot of them if not the majority only do a questionable job. With some the lady almost has to prewash them before putting them in. Then kind of sort them when removing for being clean or not.
The currant whirlpool is effective in my opinion. Because it stops to reheat up the water periodically. Plus may be taking the water temperature very high. Then starts to work again. This is about a four hour cycle. When the wife states they are really clean she means it. The whirlpool has also about an hour cycle. I noticed the wife discontinued using that very fast. I doubt you really have a choice of what detergent to use in it. Those recommended pellets are probably the best. They can use really aggressive chemicals as the human hands are not in the water. Plus there are enough rinses to get the residue off the dishes. I really believe the wife thinks it is the best one ever at getting the dishes clean. At least that she has owned by far. The long operational cycle does not seem to matter either as the noise is so low. Durability and serviceability I cannot really comment on. What I do suspect is if it had to be replaced she would insist on the same brand at this time. Another consideration although rubber gloves can be worn. Washing dishes by hand is probably not the best for the skin on their hands with dishwashing liquids. Although I would still let a woman touch my body with dishpan hands. At my age if they had paint on them I probably would not object. Greasy fingerprints I will have to think about. Although I am sure over time a lot of women have experienced them. On their bodies. Personally I suspect women like dishwashers as they conceal the dirty dishes till they feel like putting them through a cycle. Plus they have acquired enough of a load. So they are not stacked up around the sink area for any time. Basically off the table and into the dishwasher. We purchased this dishwasher simply because all the reviews basically where the same. The women found it washed the dishes better than anything they had owned before. Even though it takes about four hours to do it. I have this feeling that all the dishwasher competition will move to the very long cycles if they have not already. I have an unfounded suspicion your Sweety might use a dishwasher if it really does the job consistently. Women do not like to have to put the dishes that are not clean back through another cycle. These long cycle machines mean the lady does not have to inspect the dishes she is unloading. They seem to be always clean. I always tried to design things so the dishwasher is really as close to the shelves and drawers. The dishes and silverware will be unloaded into. If not really convienient I could see this as a turn off as well. After some though use only the detergent pellet recommended. It may be slow release. I really suspect you will not get the performance using a substitute. I also thought in the early days we brought expensive brands. Until I found out you can spend thousands for one designed for domestic use. Last edited by barry12345; 10-05-2019 at 03:19 AM. |
