advertisment industry
46 years since school, don't have spell check.
My thoughts, commercials, ads, and ads on internet suck. I have never bought on thing in life because of them. Always word of mouth, and now reviews, and always generic. Seems to me workers, would be paid more, and more products sold,be cutting out advertising spending.

In my opinion the epitome of your thoughts are paying an athlete 50 million to endorse a shoe made in China for four dollars so they can sell them for a hundred plus. It is the stupid consumer that pays it.

Advertising.....
The popular theory among advertisers is that if they didn't advertise products would cost more. Because the turnover in goods would be slower and they would have money tied up in inventory. Advertisers don't think of their ads as something that convinces you to buy. They consider it educating the public on the merits of their product. They do manage to get consumer info out there. For example my wife has been bugging me to get her a new SUV but she hates it that all of them are so slow. But an ad just last night said that Ford has a new SUV with a 496 hp engine. So I'm not rushing out to buy one but I am going to look into them. But I feel just like you. I trust the word of other users. But without adverting I would not know what questions to ask of them. I would not know a product that met my need existed. It's complicated. |

Advertising may be very effective with impulse buyers. It also forces the brain into a form of familiarity with the name or products.
Quality versus price is perhaps what I look for I suspect. Or value for price. Whatever keeps the consumer economy strong I have to understand. Not follow. Although to me it is pushed too far reciently. I saw an add for a minor hand tool not long ago. No price in the ad. Just so much a month. It made me thing that the price of anything has become a non issue for many. Just the payment per month or by weekly or whatever concerns them. Anything other than the price. A field day for retailers of new cars. Customers that have little concern for the overall price as it is an abstract thing to them now. They no longer even care how far underwater they are. You have to almost be out of your mind to pay 28 to 29 percent interest. Yet many do today on huge unsecured balances. This to me is a formal recognition of the general state of the heavy consumer. At this time there constant willingness to accumulate more debt is a very important factor in the economy such as it is. A hefty percentage of the consumers are and have already been conditioned. What I have to consider. Is this actually a form of disease overall? Yes personally I pay for a lot of things with a credit card. I still am aware that I am spending money though. Plus the amount. Any balance is automatically paid off at the end of each month. |

You can still check out the Ford quality at this time. Perhaps it is adequate for the price perhaps not. For some the price matters for others not or not so much. I agree it is complicated by many factors. Really high power is a waste around here as speeding tickets are all too common. A few and they pull your licence for a time. Ten miles over on the highway now will get their serious attention. Unless you are in a heavy stream of traffic doing it. They stopped the wife for two miles over this year. I just set the cruise at the limit now. We still make better time than with the loss of it when stopped. The wife travels so much on the highways. If I am along she points out all the strange brands of cars they are using to trap speeders. Favorite method is for them to take the lead spot in a line of traffic. We use a two lane highway a lot as it avoids the tolls and is the same physical distance. Plus is in great condition. Lightly used other than by some of us locals. It is historical with no trucks allowed. |

That sounds like my kindof road. I thought your local was remote enough to avoid heavy traffic.

I get topoftheline shirts shorts etc. at thrift stores for dimes on the dollar. (well, now maybe quarters on the dollar.) I recognize brand names 'cause of the ones I buy cheap.
I only buy shoes-boots and knickers new, , , ,

Road that the wife uses several times a week. Has many times almost no opposing traffic all the way through. Even the toll road is not usually that busy yet. Although it is the main road to major cities. So truck traffic is substantial at times. They are barred from using the old two lane road. The old commercial establishments closed up years ago along it. Plus are either are now torn down or in a state of decay. It was the main east west road and the only one in this region years ago. I believe it was even a stagecoach road before the railway was established. One can only imagine the trip In the winter. Perhaps consisting of thirty to forty mile segments per day over terrible roads. Some of the original coach houses for lodging and changes of horses still exist. Most movement may have been by coastal ships in seasonal weather. At least the native indian population were very friendly around here being the Mic Macs. The main road does also pick up in tourist season with RV traffic especially. With the price of fuel up here you would think staying at motels would be far easier. The signage does not specify it is no longer in distance and with very nice stretches. Up over Folly mountain. I though they would reduce the upkeep of the road with the toll road coming into existence. Yet are really keeping it up. Perhaps as a plausible threat if the toll road owners get too greedy. The toll road is a private venture. The highway signs at both ends on the main road just state last exit before toll highway. The wife leaves tomorrow on another road trip. Monday she goes again to Halifax. So I will try to take some video or pictures along that road and have a daughter post it on this thread. Weather permitting. The wife will not drive in larger cities. So I get to go with her on those occasions. Last edited by barry12345; 09-27-2019 at 12:21 PM. |

But I go to Dallas a lot and sometimes to Denver. Both are places with terrible traffic and if you don't have the power to get on the freeway you will just have to sit there until the rush is over. Plus I like to drive fast. I just drove 1250 miles and didn't see one cop. Budget cutbacks in Oklahoma make speed enforcement by the Highway Patrol a thing of the past. |

Welcome to the site. There will always be some form of tradeoff. My approach has been to get the best quality for the money sensibly available. For example. In mechanical hand tools I can afford snap on but it is far too much overkill for what I do. I get equal serviceability and lifespan out of much more cost effective tools. Cheaper tools at one time where vastly inferior but times started to change some decades back. Plus times change constantly. I could take a car apart at one time with only a small metal hand carried box of tools. Where today I have to have major toolboxes and all kinds of semi specialty tools. Or you cannot get it done. There is no substitute or workaround without them. Back when a dollar had some value. You could put a few pieces of snap on service tools in one hand off their truck for three hundred dollars. The problem really amounted to. The quality was there with snap on but it was just too expensive for what they were. So you were not really getting value for your money. The only way to get quality for available resources at times is to buy good used. Last edited by barry12345; 10-02-2019 at 05:25 PM. |
