Yes, the computerization brought massive improvements, but I would like to expand on what you are saying. Computerization not only improved cars with the processors on board, but Computer Aided Design has been a big part of the improvement equation as well.

I would put the Cooper Mini as the possible trend setter. McPherson struts etc. I read somewhere that the early Honda Civics were inspired by them.

One thing that I think spurred the recent advancements is Surface Mount Technology. I think this came on about 20 years ago. Going from tubes to transistors was a large leap. The SMT was as much of a leap. Shrinking electronic items by 1/4 or more. So, less weight, less space. So, same space in autos to fill with more stuff.
