poker

Our 14 year old grandson stayed with us on Saturday night. I had some time alone with him and we ended up playing cards.

We started with war. I could not really remember all the rules.

Soon we switched to poker. I taught him how to play five card draw. He had some coin on him and insisted we play for money. So we played nickel dime quarter ante for a couple hours. Next day (Sunday) we played for another couple hours. It was a gas. He grasped the idea of bluffing and how to draw. I was very impressed.

They came over last night for dinner. After eating we decided to play some more poker. His twin bros joined in. One of the twins got up about $5; cleaned it up and went home.

I asked the oldest about playing war and he said we actually never played it.

Good clean fun!

Wow. That's a smart kid! I am surprised but how smart kids are today. I have two and they are leaving me in shock every day. One day, I was playing on https://www.u12x.com/แทงบอล/ and one of them has told me to place a bet on that specific team. I've decided to listen to him and I've actually won some money. I couldn't believe it! I also want to teach them how to play poker. When it comes to technology, they know better than me and they can solve any problem. I am so happy that I have them and I cannot wait to raise them to be strong, but kind men.

My 2 sons are in "Scouts BSA" and on weekend campouts, packs of cards are often in demand. Not sure what they play (War was mentioned but I forget the other names...).
Glad to see them not on a screen 24/7 (the leaders enforce this...) but also hope that the car games are not getting taken too far (they haven't started stealing money from me...yet...

Running a floating poker game can get you in a heap of trouble.

The best bluff I ever came up with in 5 card draw: if you are dealt 3 of a kind, ask for only one card. Makes it look like you have 2 pairs. Drawing into a full house is low odds, there are only 2 of each of those cards left.

In my bluff, there are better odds for pairing up the remaining odd card than drawing into 4 of a kind. Being dealt a pair after drawing too not high odds, not sure which is more likely - pairing up your odd card or drawing a pair. Similar I would guess. Drawing two cards looks more like three of a kind. What else might move you to ask for two?

This one worked for me twice. Helped that my 3 of a kind were higher value cards than my opponents 3 of a kind.

The same grandson pole vaulted in his first meet yesterday. He is a freshman and vaulting this year for the first time. He cleared 7' and scored a point for his team. He got beat out of second place by a fellow who cleared the same height but had one less miss along the way.

His dad (my son) was an excellent vaulter. He broke the school record in 96 which had been set in 73 and finished fifth in the state meet.

I participated in track for four years and only scored points for the team a couple of times when we competed with much weaker schools and the coach took out our best runners in some events....so I guess the speed came from my wife's. side of the family.

I fenced in High School and was a semi-finalist at the Junior Olympics at a meet in NYC (at Salle Santelli, where I fenced a few times too.). In my senior year, NYU, a powerhouse fencing school, approached me and offered a half scholarship. “Is that the college you want to go to?” My dad asked. “No, it is a good school, but I don’t want to go to school in Greenwich Village.” “Then apply to the schools you do want to go to.”

I did, got in, and walked on and made the fencing team. I gave it up after my freshman year as I didn’t want to make the commitment. The coach had told me to drop a class I wanted to take for my major as it conflicted with practice. He was pissed, as I had become his number one in sabre on the freshman team, and beat both the Army and the Navy fencers.

The commitment got to be too much for me. I especially didn’t like running backwards for a mile three times a week, although I knew how much it helped me win matches. Sucking wind and worrying about falling (as a few teammates did) I said to myself, this is not why you are in college.

The only sport I was halfway decent in was wrestling. I walked on at Ball State and worked out with the team off season for a month or two and after the first quarter I had a 1.76 grade point. So I asked myself could I make a living with wrestling better than being an Architect. I chose Architecture and never looked back. It is the one thing I was really good at.
