I used to go watch the freaks at midnight

Me too at the Rialto Theater in South Pasadena, Ca. .

One time they rented -one- limousine and had it repeatedly go 'round the block, load up two or three more people dressed as characters and pull up in front to let them out then roar off again...

I remember it being a smash hit movie when new, I didn't get to see it for ten years or so when a woman took me to a Friday midnight showing .
