Anybody seen it? Saw it last night and was highly dissappointed. Not in the basics of the film itself but in the mess they made of the score.
I thougth it was so bad I was almost at the point several times of walking out. Not only was it orders of magnitude too loud but incredibly distracting. This is not an "effects" film. The action is almost exclusively in the dialogue and if you cannot hear what the hell the actors are saying there is no damn point in seeing the film. Put another way. A good score enhances a movie. In the case of Star Wars for examle it literally makes the film. This was garbage and almost trashed it. The same as was done in Dunkirk, which this composer apparently used for inspiration. The same compositional "gang" responsible for that having wrecked the sequel to Blade Runner a few years before. Has nothing to do with the story line but is in my opinion an example of a director allowing his hubris to fly off the charts. Whatever the hell he thought he was doing, all he did was turn what should have been an epic movie into a three hour feat of endurance.

How was the movie itself? Im planning on seeing it this week. My fear with movies like this is that too much artistic license is take with what really happened and changed it to make it more "movie" like. This is a story that deserves to be told as accurately as possible, warts and all.

I believe the movie itself stayed pretty true to the book and the history. In that respect it was good. My only complaint had to do with the irritating noise you had to put up with thru-out from the "composer".

That might have been the theatres fault. Going to see it at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, together with Universal the only movie theatre in LA where you can watch it in 70mm and with the right aspect ratio. Looking forward to it.

The releasing company will be getting feedback from viewers the first week or so. If this sound thing is a common topic they can address it quickly enough.

But the theater can make a big difference. Sound systems are so complex these days that they can get out of whack.

Hopefully Jorn will weigh in. The place he is going is supposed to be the last word on how a film is shown to the public.

Saw the movie yesterday afternoon. Very enjoyable and factual. After seeing what Robert Oppenheimer went through after the war (he was stripped of his security clearance) it was nice to read that in 2022, the then United States Secretary of Energy vacated the decision to remove his security clearance because the investigation conducted was flawed.

Going to see it tomorrow. Don't tell me how it ends I like surprises. ~

Saw it today. Very good movie. I did not find the sound track to be intrusive so perhaps the theater was at fault.

The issues it brings to light both at the time and today are deeply disturbing.

You didn't see the Barbie movie first?

Perhpas it is largely the theaters fault. I've had this complaint about other movies I've seen recently. Yes, I get that at 55 I'm heading towards "old curmudgeon" status but it's not just that. I'm perfectly happy to turn "Rammstein" up high on the headphones for example.

If the volume had been lower it might have been better. But I still think the score itself was ****. And thinking back on it the silly sex scene during the "interrogation" was just intellectual masturbation in my opinion.

I had to re-read your post so let me clarify mine.

The music in the theater was LOUD. My seat was vibrating when the aftershock of nuke passed by I did not find the score detracting at all. The dialogue was clear and I never missed anything that was said.

On the score...I liked the use of silence when the nuke itself went off.....You had all the sound....score, ticking of the clock and then ....nothing. Just silence as the nuke went off. The movie let you and your mind take over. Reminded me of the Tom Cruise alien movie Signs that had no back ground music what so ever if I recall correctly. That was the first time, that such an experiment was done with a movie. The lack of a score made that particular movie very "different".

Sex scenes are often shot just for the European market. They sort of expect it.

The film would have then been tested in the US months before it's release. If the test aud found the scene, or any scene, out of place the film would be edited until test auds were happy with it.

I don't put in anything that does not drive the plot but these days it's the marketing guys that seem to have the last word. That's what gives us the 'directors cut'. The money has been squeezed out of the initial release and then the director is given permission to cut the film with no oversight from the suits.
