This is one of the coolest sculptures I have ever seen. The ability to take stone and make it look like it is transparent is a skill I could only dream of.

That's pretty amazing right. Stunning to me that they could polish all those surfaces inside the folds and the other hard to get to spots. Also, the chances of some of that stuff breaking off would have to be high.

I've done a couple of large tile jobs with marble, and it carves easily enough with diamond bits in power tools, but polishing it is another matter. I have six diamond sponges, about 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of firm foam rubber with tiny industrial diamonds attached on one side. The finest one is about the equivalent of 2 or 3000 grit sandpaper. But getting something small to do that kind of polishing In a tight space has to be a real trick.

Would be a heckuva revelation to be able to watch how they did stuff like that. Pretty sure that knowledge is out there, some people probably still use those techniques on marble. I'm pretty sure they use power tools whenever they are appropriate and practical.

The amount of patience and skill required must be insane. wish i had even a fraction of that talent!

This was completed just before 1850. Not sure if any of that tech was available in that day.
