Office chair suggestions.........

I have found myself in a position where I have to go back to work. Not because I need to but because someone temped me with money to finish their project.

But this means I will need to be sitting in front of a keyboard for six hours at a time. When I get started I tend to rip through things and not take a break, so I am looking for a chair capable of being comfortable for six hours of non stop use.

Any suggestions? My current chair is ready for replacement.

Cost is not an object. Comfort is.

Test drive them. If they are soft and comfy right up front then they are too soft and will disappoint. Firmer is better. Like mattresses.

It might sound crazy, but I believe my brother in law had the best advice. Think of the car with the best drivers seat, or at least one you really enjoyed. Head to a junkyard and pull the passenger seat without much wear. A simple frame can be fabricated out of steel angle from a hardware store. I welded mine but bolting is an option.

I have a w124 seat as my daily "driver" for my home office, a w126 for my personal computer desk and one of my sons has an Audi A4 for his computer desk. My brother in law is partial to Infinity Q seats.

And it's a bit fun to hook them up with a small battery or inverter. It's hilarious to demonstrate your electronic adjustments for the backrest, lumbar support, headrest and heated seat.

I’ve always had a good fit with the Steelecase chairs because almost every part is adjustable and or customizable on the higher end models. If it’s on your own dime though they are kind of expensive even though they look pretty ordinary.

I have been considering a car seat set up. Recaro used to sell such a thing.

The best seat I have ever found for long distance is a Porsche 928. I also used to cover 12 hours at a time in my old 124.

I had not considered the battery thing. I have a small 12v used for game cameras that would work.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will start working on this.

Forget the chairs. Get one of these. You are working at home anyway, so wear the jammies and nap whenever the mood strikes. Bonus: makes a great venue to interview secretaries and assistants. One stop shopping!

I have used car chairs as office and gaming chairs. They sit low on their own, so you need a base to raise it up for most desks. Not a problem, but you can't use an office chair base because that will then be too high. So your option is mainly custom built, or maybe some after market exists now.

2nd is they are heavy, so if yu roll around a lot, its very easy to damage the floor. A fixed base works but then its harder to move.

3rd is airflow. In a car, ttpically you have some ventilation and airflow. This is obviously solved with a fan near the desk but I found that my back still got pretty sweaty after a coffee or two, despite not having that issue in the car they came from. I have this issue with many office chairs too, depending on the fabric (although my seats are leather) Maybe I am just a real sweaty dude.

Ultimately agree with the herman miller rec. Expensive but worth it. I have a mesh-backed knockoff with adjustable lumbar support which has lasted for 5-6 years of daily use (I work from home). I got it off wayfair and very happy with it. My car seats sit in the attic, eventually hope to use them with my racing wheel setup but dont have the room for that. Originally bought them to harvest a NLA airbag sensor, crazy that the seat set was cheaper than just buying the sensor.

Going to check these out in a week or so. The Herman Millers, that is.

Thanks to everyone. I trust the opinions I get here as where else can you quiz such a wide range of experience. No matter what you are taking about.

I have known a few Directors that would have been right at home with that in their office.
