network issues

I was having some connectivity issues so I unplugged the modem (12+ yrs old) and plugged it back in. Nothing. No power. Not sure if it the modem of the power source.

Spectrum gave me a new modem so I hooked ot up, registerr it with them. Did path cable from the modem to the laptop and I have internet. Hooked it into the router (also 12+ yrs old) and nothing. The lights by the cat5 conx at the modem and router blink so it does recognize the fact that its connected. Internet light on the router lights up. No internet. Ran a patch line from the router to the laptop...no internet. It does recognize that the router is hooked up but when I type in the router IP it wants to try and fix the conx, not bring me thr router log in page. So, I think the router is bad. Going gnro replace it today.

The other issue is that I have a cat5 line going in the attic to the TV in the family room. If I hook that line directly to the modem, no internet. I also brought the lap top to where the TV is and hooked it up...no internet. Could that line have been hit by a surge? Also, when I hooked t hat like to the hub that's below the TV, it blinks when connected to the router so I think the line is good (I dont have a line tester).

That line.to the TV has me concerned that the issue is not the router even though most the evidence points to it.

Any ideas?

So is the new spectrum router working on any device? Many times those also have integrated routers. May have missed it in your description.

You already did the hard reset which usually clears the DHCP tables (ensure its a full factory reset not just the hard restart). A power surge could have messed something up but id bet its now just with the handshake on the.new device.

Worth noting that torubleshooting like this is one of the best uses of AI (rec claude, often cleaner results).

Its a stand alone modem. I ciuld run a cat5 directly to a pc and the oc worked fine.

Ended up getting a cheap ($90) TP router and that did the trick. I did not think to name the ASID the same.as.th3 old.one.with the same password. Half way through reconnecting all the apps Im thinking ro myself....duh....that was stupid.

Anyway, everything is up and running. Not sure how/if rhe modem fried the router. If it didn't, its one hell of a coincidence.
