With the new movie out I harken back to my high school days and Latin classes. What a great time.

Have not seen the movie yet but I read it in HS. Then realized that I have never read The Iliad.

So I have started and it is fascinating. Like reading Shakespeare it takes a bit to get into the tempo of unusual (for us) sentence structure - like the verb always at the end. But soon into Book I it clicks in.

I finally watched Troy, 2004, last night. Better than I thought it would be. I understand it's not even all that accurate to Homer, but somewhat, but who knows all that stuff is covered up with huge amounts of long accumulated detritus. The ruins weren't even discovered until the late 1800s.

Interesting stuff. I'm always struck by how many good young men were slain in large numbers for the sake of imperial ambition.
