Mexico's most popular Mercedes

Today hundreds of thousands of mexicans sang, cheered and sobbed along the streets by the time a customized G-Class was riding along Mexico City.

Faithful hordes climbed trees, hung from balconies and perched on rooftops to get a view of the pope, who waved through the glass windows from the pope mobile.

The vehicle is armored with a complete Level 7 blindage and the pope requested at the last minute to have the windows opened to hear the people singing and give the crowds a better view.

If Jesus was around today he'd be driving a 1983 240D with a manual transmission that is still running r12 in the a/c system and the odo never moves off of 122500.

Does anyone know if the Pope is a diyer'? Maybe someone needs to send him the link to www.peachparts.com

Well, actually that is...

...the Papamobil Mercedes Benz gave to the Pope when he visited Germany, I think it was in 1984.

Somewhere I have some slides I shoot at the Munich Olympia-Stadion with the Pope in that car.

Looks like the car is still in use, it still has the eightis golden rims

The Vatican has a long history of using Mercedes Benz vehicles.

When I find the slides I will post them for you.

Kind regards
Eberhard

We were talking in the ML forum about the New PopeMobile - a ML.

I couldn't resist again sharing a pope-mobile story: the Pope wants to drive his shiny new ML Popemobile. His driver says “No way, your Holiness.” The pope says “but I really want to drive, and if you don’t let me, I’ll get another driver.”

The driver, valuing his job (he works for an Italian family, after all), relents. The pope takes the wheel and for fun the driver gets in back.

The Pope is speeding along, enjoying the ride and performance of the ML, when the Pope passes a police officer on a motorcycle. The pursue ensues and once the Pope notices the Police officer, siren a-blazing and lights a-flahsin, the Pope pulls over. The police officer walks up to the window and asks for the Pope’s license, registration, and insurance, while the driver, sitting in the Pontiff’s usual seat looks on in horror. The officer asks the Pope to remain where he is and walks back to his mount. The officer doesn’t even look up at person in the Pope’s seat.

The officer gets on the radio and calls dispatch. Upon hearing the dispatcher the officer demands to talk with the Captain. After a moment the police Captain comes on the line to ask the problem. The Officer tells the Captain that he is unsure of how to proceed. The Captain wants to know why. The Officer then explains to the Captain that he (the officer) pulled a guy over for driving too fast, and the Officer goes on to say he is afraid because the car is the Popemobile, and because the Officer doesn’t know who is sitting in the Pope’s seat, but he tells the Captain whoever it is, has the Pope working as his driver....
