Do you live on one of those stupidly named streets in Columbia, like "Running Squirrel Way"? I know Columbia was one of the earliest planned cities, but why those street names?

I do a lot of my shopping & dining in Columbia now. There are indeed some wierd place names there. A lot of Columbia could really use a face lift, IMO. Particularly all those funky little shopping enclaves tucked away on curvy streets. Many of them could stand to be bulldozed & rebuilt in a style more up with the times. I lived in Olney for over 20 years, and was there during the sniper situation. My wife was driving to Bethesda daily at the time, so she passed by 3 of the shooting sites within a short time of the event. Besides the gas station in Kensington: One incident in front of Leisure World shopping center, and one on Conneticutt Ave just above Georgia. She, like so many others here, was terrified to get out of her car. David |

I usually think of Bel Air, ( where I live) as far above the DC area, but during that time, it felt way too close. Knowing that someone could hit I95 and be in Harford County in 45 minutes or so was not very reassuring. I can only imagine the stress of actually living, and driving past the know target sites. Glad it is over.

I just looked at a map on Google.
It looks to me as though Bel Air is indeed pretty far out there, I might even go so far as to call it the boonie's ![]() |

I used to think so. But during the sniper siege, it felt way too close to DC.

Anywhere around here was too close back then... I went to work in Bethesda and came straight home, no stops anywere! Luckily for one of the weeks I was off in Texas for training but it was all over the news there too.

Were they not apprehended at a rest stop on I 70, near Frederick?

The 270 rest area, northbound, is indeed where they were captured.
The week before, there was a big flurry of police activity on the southbound side of 270. Many reports were citing a white panel van of sorts as the possible vehicle they were operating out of. A little bit north of Germantown, Egans BBQ Service had parked their white catering van within site of the highway. Someone apparently "tipped off" the police that the snipers van was in a field beside 270, causing all sorts commotion. |

Remember the extremely wrong profiling? They were looking for an angry, middle-aged white guy, in a white van.
