Yeh, neat-o. But let's be real. How many people are gonna take a $60,000 SUV and actually drive it like that? (Or whatever the thing costs). I have a friend with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I've teased him about the thing, and tried to get him to go 4-wheeling with me and keep up with my '71 Dodge power wagon. Hasn't taken me up on it yet!
:p

Yeah, I agree. It is like most things in this modern era - it's all about an image.
What you are buying is an image. And then *projecting* yourself into it. Like - "Hey, that's gonna be me! I'm going to take my hard-earned $60K and buy that SUV and then with all my free time, I'll take a trip to the Nevada desert and bounce the thing off every large rock formation I can find. Maybe I can even get it up on two wheels! Yeah, I can do that!" Advertising and marketing have become so honed and perfected that what is being sold to the public is more than just simple goods. It is the image and mythos attached to the goods. Slick imagery and targeted music accompany ads to sculpt and drive home the intended image to the intended market group. I typically think most SUV drivers are wankers - and poor drivers to boot. Hey, I'm sure some of them actually use the vehicle (like my brother who drives a Nissan Pathfinder and actually makes it live up to its namesake by offroading at our cottage and pulling stumps/hauling wood, etc.) and I don't want to offend any owners here who fall into this category. However, if another stressed mom in a Ford Exploder cuts me off on the way to the video store again because she can't see over the passenger chair headrest, I'm gonna.... Not to mention if I hear another brainwashed consumer say "I bought it because it makes me feel safe, I'm so much higher than everyone else." Arrrgh! So I guess my reaction to it is also a *yawn*. I'd love to see a 959 turbo though...

It'll kick the snot out of a Cayenne offroad, I'll bet. Personally, I think the VW/Audi Group should take control of Porsche, and have them build sportscars. Hey, there's already a close working relationship there. -Sam |

I feel like a pessimist when I say this but I personally think an SUV is the Ultimate Compromise in a vehicle......especially the Porsche Cayenne.
1. Due to it's weight peformance will be lacking. 2. Because of its height handling will be poor. 3. Due to it's off road capability, ride comfort will be compromised. 4. Because they are mainly designed for on road use, off road use is limited. 5. Since it is designed for partial off road larger wheel wells are required hence less interior space and less room for passengers and cargo. I guess you can look also look at it the other way.....and SUV does a little bit of everything. I truly think the main attraction towards SUV's are their appearance, forward visibility and the feeling that bigger is better in an accident.

I had a 2000 ML for my wife, but traded for the Volvo. It had too many minor problems. I evaluated G-Class before buying the S-Class. I loved the build quality, but it did not give me enough on-road smoothness (via console control). I was not looking for the S-Class type of ride. Plus I drive on the highway alot and needed a better handling vehicle. What I want is : G500 off-road handling S600 on-road handling S600 interior Then I will buy the G and kept forever and thats the truth! People always wonder how my S-Class can out handling there vehicle. It the driver, not the car! Last edited by Chicagoland; 11-20-2002 at 01:15 PM. |
