Favorite towns/cities you have visited
Howdy,
A part of my job is to travel quite a bit and I've been all over the US and overseas (Hawaii, Guam, Gitmo). In all my travels, the towns I'd most like to live are those medium size ones with not too many people but that have some interesting things to see. What's your favorite towns/cities? Here's my list: San Louis Obispo, CA--college town in central California. Not too far from anything you want to do. Norman, OK--I went to school there. Not to big, not too small. A college town, so entertainment value is up there. Great Falls, MT--This is actually a bustling kind of town right in the middle of alot of nowhere. Traverse City, MI--It is really underappreciated how beautiful lake Michigan is in the north. Gainsville, FL--Another college town with all the fun that implies. Gila Bend, AZ--Not much to do here, but southern Arizona in the Winter is very much unappreciated. This is a really beautiful State when it is not blazing hot. Regina, Canada--Another beautiful city in the fall when the weather is nice. Seattle, WA--Not a small town, but Seattle offers both great views and alot of entertainment. There wasn't a single day that we didn't go do something different. San Diego--We were working up in the Mt. Laguna area up Sunrise Highway about half way to Julian. San Diego itself is great, if a little crowded, but you can also get way out of town pretty fast. I really prefer the mid size towns like San Louis Obispo that have places to shop and things to see but aren't as crowded as a bigger city. Sholin

I can think of 3, which, to me, have all been a home away from home to varying degrees: 1) Seaside, Oregon, 2) Newport, Oregon, and, of course, 3) Greenwater, Washington

Here are a few places I though were great:
1. Boston, Great pubs, restuarants and has personality 2. New York City, If you haven't gone you definitely should! 3. DC, Other than New York City this has to be the number two place for its ethnic diversity, from restuarants to nightlife. 4. San Juan Capistrano, Quaint city by the beach, would love to live here. There are several others but I haven't spent enough time to truly recommend them.

My list:
Vienna, Austria - The most liveable city in the world. Safe, clean, pretty...is more like a giant, majestic village. Annapolis, Maryland - Great to visit in the summer, good food, sailing, and crabs. Berlin - A great city to visit if you enjoy history, especially that of the 20th century. Newport, RI. - I like the air up there. My favorite region of the U.S. Zell am See, Austria - The most perfect town in the world, just need a way to move here permanantly... Mike |

Sholin - for many like me who probably don't have much left in the way of brains (fried by the heat), Arizona is even beautiful when it's hot...! Best sunsets anywhere, but maybe that's because much of the year, it's a blessing when that bugger goes behind the horizon....
My list of favorites among those I have visited or lived in, no particular order, except as noted - 1. Seattle, Washington 2. Eugene, Oregon 3. Phoenix, Az. and the Valley of the Sun (grew up there) 4. Aspen, Colorado 5. Santa Fe, New Mexico 6. Greensboro, NC 7. London, England 8. St. Andrews, Scotland (for the love of golf...) 9. Anywhere on the French Riviera 10. Annapolis, Maryland (Go Navy...) 11. Vancouver, B.C. 12. Monterey/Carmel, California My favorite city in all the world - San Francisco, California.

Not in order:
Haines, Alaska. On the ocean, incredible drive from Haines Junction over the mountains. And did I mention some of the largest Bald Eagle populations on the planet? Port Townsend, Washington State. Well, it's pretty touristy but we got married there, and the Old Consulate Inn is one of the finest B&B's anywhere. Jasper, Alberta. Still a little rugged around the edges, and the off season brings affordable hotel rates, great camping and hiking in more volatile weather, and fewer bugs. Meet you for lunch at the summit of Mount Athabasca! Seaside, Oregon to Cannon Beach. Want coastal scenery? Damn! Nice in the summer, better in the fall when the traffic thins a bit and the waves pick up, if only slightly. Las Vegas. Disney Land Rated NC-17. Everyone needs to visit at least once a decade to remind yourself of what humans are capable of creating in the name of decadance. Waterton, Alberta. Go in the early spring when the town is deserted and the wind is howling off the lake. Stay in Kilmorey Lodge and curl up next to the fire with a good book and hope you get snowed in. Big wet snow closes the highway and makes you think you're in a painting. Just make sure to set a few extra days aside... The Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Drive it and you'll know. If possible, take a motorcyle trip, and you'll understand the addiction of this part of the world. Packed with tourists in the summer, but go anyway. Iqualuit, Baffin Island. Snow goes away at the end of June and comes back at the end of August. The wind is strong enough in the winter to blow buildings away. The blizzards can mean being stuck in your house for days on end. But, it's an experience never to forgot, no matter what season you visit in. The tundra has a unique smell that floods my mind with memories each time I catch a whiff. Gas up the car honey...

I had the great luck one time of being on business travel to Seattle during their two weeks of summer. Very, very nice! And that far north the summer days are pretty long.
Otherwise, rain. ![]() Ken300D |
