The Shadow was a sweet ride. While I am relatively young, I can still appreciate it for what it was. I dunno know about those brakes though...

I like the new Vincent as well, the Black Lightening. Now that is a NAKED bike, bare carbon-fibre and all.

Well sure your 300SD is "dated", the thing is going on 25 years old! I can appreciate a Harley for what it is. Some parts of it now are obviously high-tech, but it's a little bit like taking your 300SD, putting common-rail injection on the 617 motor, and then installing teleaid, distronic, and maybe heated seats and a factory cupholder. I just don't get it.
BMW had it right from the start, I still maintain the company emblem stands for "Best Motorcycles in the World"

ps And don't even start with me on Buell. Buell, I don't know, to put it in Mercedes terminology would be like taking a 617 motor and putting it in a Vision SLR. Still don't get it.

I already did the cupholder, I've acquired the parts for heated seats, I'm not crazy about teleaid, but the common-rail is a GREAT idea!

Haha, I don't get it either. Plus, Buells aren't even competitive. Harleys don't have to be, as they have a long standing inage and tradition to support them, but Buells are definately the cycle outcast. They cost WAY too much for what you are getting

I have a custom Harley with a rigid frame, stroked shovelhead engine with a 3 inch open belt primary. It is magneto driven, hence no battery or alternator. I enjoy it a great deal. Here in Texas it will fry you riding it in the summer. I teach summer school and the ride to school is great - the ride home is hell!

Buell is now the bike that Ducati was before they entered the horsepower race. I found the Buell to be light, well balanced and really tossable. I would compare it to a Lotus Elan (not alot of power but alot of fun).

The two latest models, the Firebolt XB9R & the NEW Lightning XB9S are advertised this weekend at a Harley dealership here in Portland for $8,499. No sales tax in Oregon.

These may be the best handling HD products and the best value in an HD product ever.

As previously opined, riders of any brand motorcycle should look upon other riders (regardless of what they happen to be riding) as more of a "brother" than those who don't ride...

This childish thing of one type not waving back to (or even acknowledging the existance of) another rider only demonstrates their ignorance of what is really important about riding motorcycles:

actually RIDING motorcycles!

Years back I wa sitting in a eatery in Haines Junction, inside Kluane National Park, on my way to Alaska. I was riding solo, and though only two hours out of Whitehorse, had rode the last half hour in a mix of rain and snow. I had been sitting for about an hour, nursing my Kluane Burger (damn, it was good) and stretching out my Coke, waiting for the weather to lift a bit.

A small group of non-colour-flying outlaws on a road trip from California blew in, and stopped to escape the driving rain. I had parked my Honda facing backward outside the door, and one by one the bikers pedalled their HD's in next to my "Rice-grindin' horse."

Before long, we were all sitting at a couple tables, swapping road stories. The smallest fellow was the obvious "leader" and his name was Roman. Yeah, like the Romans. We debated the merits of helmets and laughed about Rubbies on Gold Wings. They had seen a group that was followed by a full size van carrying luggage.

The sun started to peek out, and everyone reached for bike keys. I went to pay my bill, and Roman snatched it up. He gave me a hearty handshake a told me to "make 'er a good one."

They were headed south, and I was going north. As we pulled out of the lot, they gave me one last wave, and thundered off. As I took the Honda through her gears I grinned from ear to ear.

If you don't understand why, don't buy a bike. If you have one, sell it, or better yet, give it away to someone that has bike blood but can't afford a scoot.

If a 250 Rebel is all you can afford or mange, go for it. If a FatBoy is your ride, then I'm envious, but you're no better than the guy on the 250.

I said it before, but I'll say it again,

Live to Ride, Ride to Live.

I second that. We can sit here and debate which bike is better, much like we debate which Benz is better. But in the end, all that matters is that you ride, love riding, and will continue riding. I myself have been out of the saddle for almost a year, way too long if you ask me. Just waiting for some money to come my way. I will be on sport-bikes for a while I know, and get greif for it for all who don't ride. They all insist I am just after the fun-boy image. They ask why buy a bike for an image. I tell them, they don't understand. I ride because I love it. I like the handling and performance a sport-bike gives me. I am young enough that I can be comfortable on them for distances, unlike most mercedes drivers. :p There is something about the wind in your face [I wear a lid], the road flyign by beneath your feet and the sound of the bike below you that is almost surreal. There it the ultimate connection between Man, machine, the road, and nature. I will never give it up.

Just keep the shiny side up

I think this is an excellent thread on the power of opinion and choice. I prefer Harleys, I have a lot of books on the history of the company and on repair and service. There seems to be a prevalent attitude about riding and owning a Harley. Many books have been written on this subject. I know many people who do not like Harleys, but that is fine because this is America. I can truthfully say that a brotherhood does exist among Harley owners. Once, I was stranded with a broken chain and a fellow Harley rider went and got a trailer, and hauled me home. The amazing thing is he was the third to stop and offer assistance. My bike is homemade, a custom. The sad thing is that the Harley, once the working man's bike, has become to expensive for most to afford. My bike cost me $12,000 to build because I supplied most of the labor. With labor it would easily have doubled. Parts are very expensive also, and some are cheaply made imports.
I am like most on this thread, ride what reflects and expresses you.....your unique personality....and enjoy!
