The E55 AMG still has some steam left, the tach isn't in the red.
Same with the Brabus
Same with the 200D (lol)
Same with the SLK (and you guys drink Red Bull over there?)
Same with a few others

I think the Phaeton is a stupid car. Who's going to pay that much for a VW when their reliability record is questionable?

Thanks for the link.

Alex

Even if the tach is not in the red, the car may have reached it's top speed. Drag is a much greater force than gearing, and it's common for cars to run out of steam prior to reaching redline.

Mercedes does undergear some of their cars, though. AMG states that the C32 is one of those cars, and a taller gear combined with the removal of the limiter will allow the car to reach 192mph with no further modifications.

BTW, the rule of thumb for figuring the additional hp required for more top speed is the square of speed measured in mph. Genrally speaking, to gain 10mph given all other factors constant, you need another 100hp.

I think some of the pics are untrue. An E34 M5 cannot break 190mph, unless highly modified. A W210 E55 has more power and a better cd, and cannot break 190mph.

I have heard a rumour that the new W211 E55 Kompressor with the right gearing and no cork can smash through 200mph, and eventually reach a drag limited 221mph. Wonder if that's just bench racing? On paper it seems possible...

BTW: Phaeton

What is wrong with the Phaeton. I have seen them running around here and they look very stylish from the outside. Inside you find one of the best craftmanship you can get nowadays. Not this cheap and bad sewn leather you find in todays Mercedes.

I had to drive my bosses CL 500 to the dealership to get the indicator light fixed (apparently a common problem with that model)

The seat at this 66 kmiles car was worn out, the leather looked like someone has sewn it who usually produces cheap office furniture for walmart.

If I would have the money to spent on a big sedan, the Phaeton W 10 tdi would be my first choice.

Check out the ventilation system with the laminar airflow. Neat. It is an engineers car, not an accountants car.

Kind regards
Eberhard

Eberhard - ya'll got Walmart's? I find good deals on all my home furnishings there and purchase all my oil from them. As always - thanks for the great pictures.

I'm very biased against VWs. I've only been in three newer ones and only one of them had nothing wrong. One of them developed the ignition coil failure, among other things (many many other things, numerous check engine lights and electrical failures), one of them revved all the way up to the redline without the driver touching the accelerator pedal. Scary stuff. When my friend brought the car in to get the coils replaced, the only replaced the bad ones (despite corporate knowledge of something being defective) AND it took over two weeks to get the parts. VWs look impressive, but I'm waiting to see how they'll weather over the next few years.

Mercedes might have their problems now (and according to JD Power, they DO have problems), but I know that they have a heritage of making good stuff and are capable of bringing their quality back on-line. I'm not sure I would buy a new one yet though. Not that it matters, I have other expenses

The difference is: Mercedes is getting worse and worse (well, it looks like the W 211 finally starts to be better again), VW improves (they had their problems with Lopez, but just remember, where their new CEO came from)

Yes, we have Walmart Nothing wrong with their office furniture. But when you buy Benz, you deserve better quality

Kind regards
Eberhard

Or, with the right vehicle, at the right roads

(still accelerating )

Last sunday night we did a 400 miles trip. Set the cruise control at 110 mph and leave it there. A new Recaro seat made the trip comfortable.

Kind regards
Eberhard
