How to raise W126 for subframe mounts?

Hello all..

I have an '86 300SDL and will be changing subframe and mounts this weekend.

How do I properly jack up the car to do these? I really don't want to lift at the differential and put jack stands under the rubber jacking pads on the sides of the car.. My thought is that the jack stands would get in the way of me trying to change the subframe mounts.

Can I jack up one side of the car and put jack stands under the front jack pad and slightly behind the rear one? Would this cause any problems with popping out/reinstalling the subframe mount since one side of the car is on the ground?

How did everyone jack up their car to change these?

Neal

PS. I have the differential mount out of the car.. how do I remove the "nuts on a metal strip" from the frame so I can put in the new ones? One end has a tiny tab and the other end has a huge tab.. do I pull on the large tab??

If you are talking about the subframe of the rear axle:

Lift the car at the differential and put it on stable jacks to the left and the right at the rocker panel right under the hole for the normal jack. Then replace the single mount at the back of the subframe. Should be easy.

If the axle is attached at the rear, open the nuts at the front. Remove the old mounts (a crowbar helps)

Sometimes the rubber doesn't want to get in easy. Take silicone spray or dish washing detergent. If necessary, build yourself a tool which looks like this:

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. The tech forum might be the right place, btw

Kind regards
Eberhard

I just replaced the subframe mounts on my 87 SDL yesterday. You have to love California cars although my SDL is originally an Arizona car. The old mounts popped off with simple prying with a screwdriver. They were about 1/2" shorter than the new mounts. I wonder how worn the old ones were.

I set the rear on stands on the rubber bumps. I was able to use the scissors jack from a Toyota to press in the mount. It also seemed that I got better alignment of the mount and receiving hole in the chassis when I lifted the subframe with the scissors jack than with the floor jack. Go figure.
