Well

I hope they are safe for consumption. I myself am not a big mushroom fan.

Well, this has to be said. No one else will do it. But everyone must be thinking it. So I'll just go ahead and blurt it out:

"Gee, that must explain some of his posts here....."

Geez this post shows how the world goes round?

Morels are one of the finest tasting mushrooms you can find in the US. Thanks for sharing your ignorance.

I know in some countries (achem, France!!), they use pigs so sniff out Truffles which can run $500/lb.
Quick funny little story. Back in the School daze I had a buddy that owned a Vietnamese pot bellied pig. We tried to train him to find morels but he always ate them before we could catch up, but he always put us in the proximity to more of these tasty little treats.

We had Wild Turkey breast with morel sauce for dinner tonight. What a treat!

Very nice, RS. I have a friend from Indiana who turned me on to mushroom hunting. We don't get the kind of volume you have down here. Great with a brined vinison roast and a red wine and butter reduction, eh?
My mouth is watering:)

Since I have a nice batch of grey and black Morels which are more solid than the white Morels, I think I am going to dehydrate a batch and serve them this fall with the first duck's harvested. Right now I'm thinking Wood Duck Breast with Morels, Wild Minnesota Rice with Morels and Asparagus with Morels.

Yum! One advantage of living in the boonies! :D Now I'll be really pissed off if you also have wild berries in your backyard!

I must be ignorant too, because I have never heard of morels. Maybe it's a regional thing... portabello mushrooms are big here (great on a burger).

Lucky guy!!!

I'm a sous chef at a very high end restaurant in the Napa Valley. I love these mushrooms. We generally pay about $13 a pound. However, at some of the local grocery stores I've seen them charge $39 for a half pound! Out here, we get to pick chanterelles, black trumpets and huge porcini mushrooms at the Sonoma coast during the fall. In California, morels are found in the Sierras, but from what I've heard you really have to know where to look. These mushrooms may sound expensive but in 2000 and 2001 we were paying up to $2600 a pound for Italian white truffles!!! After the supplement charge on the menu ($75) we barely broke even.
