Waikiki

My sister just got back form Hawaii and stayed right on Waikiki beach. She said the place was wild! There were like 2 catamarans that took them out on sunset cruises(open bar). She rode the catamaran 3 times. There was another catamaran she said that was owned and operated by a black man with a black daxhund dog(evidentally dogs aren't allowed on the beach but the cops look the other way), but she didn't get to try that one out.. Does anyone know about the other catamaran owned by the man with the dog? Is it any better than the one my sister was on?

The other thing my sister said was when they walked on the beach at night these women would run up to them and throw leis around their necks, then the women would run after them and charge money for the leis. The first time they thought the leis were free. So if you're on Waikiki Beach, just know the leis aren't free lol

The catamaran rides, surfing lessons, and outrigger canoe surf rides are part of a long tradition of "beach boy" money making operations and concessions. It's always fun to drive past the bus that brings the tourist back to their hotels after the "booze cruise" and listen to the singing.

Duke's at the Outrigger Waikiki is famous for "people watching" and all-night pickups. Last year, Jimmy Buffet was working on a book on Maui, but got bored, so he called over to Duke's to see if he could do an impromptu set on the beach. People paid to sit on the patio of the bar, but the sand seats were free.

I travel through Oahu on business frequently and I find another good place to people watch is the north shore. I think the north shore is a little less commercialized/touristy and more fun overall.

I also enjoy the windward side of the island. Just follow the highway around past the north shor and past the polynesian cultural center. The vegetation on that side of the island is much more lush than the leeward side and the beaches are much less crowded. Of course, the beaches aren't a long as the leeward side, but I enjoy the "old Hawaii" feel of that part of the island.
